Clarkson Opts In

So this extremely front loaded contract means they have no intention of trading him?
This would not be appealing to teams or maybe it would?
It would definitely be appealing. This year's salary is easy to match in a bigger deal and then you get a reasonably priced number the final 2 years. I also really like the fact that this is a 3 year deal rather than the 4yr deal most were expecting.

I don’t think he can get traded for 6 months either because the regular extend and trade rules only allow you 20% raises but I don’t know if the rules change for a renogiation and extension.

This is just a really good piece of business. Clarkson gets the bag, the Jazz retain a player they need, and the Jazz get a very cost efficient piece going forward.

My only concern with Clarkson was that we were going to overpay him on a long term deal. The added money this year has little to effect on the team, and $15M a season after this is not bad at all.

Agreed. Great maneuvering by the FO.

I believe this is the case. Salary matching in a trade during next year also gets weird iirc. It’s doable but I think it might get averaged out.

Good stuff.

Before the trade deadline last year I had said we should move on from Clarkson, but that's because I thought he would be getting a much bigger contract. $18MM per year is very reasonable for what he brings.

I'm guessing the Damian Jones deal was more about making room for the frontloaded contract than clearing room for a roster spot. I'm also assuming we can't trade Clarkson now, so I think we might be just about done with our offseason.

After this year it’s actually going to be like 15M per year.

Clarkson's contract becomes very appealing in the marketplace next year. It looks we are legit trying to make a run at the playoffs this year. Just need to figure out how the playmaking will work or not work. Clarkson may have to morph yet again.

It's a good contract for contenders who want to get off a bad one year deal if they have draft capital to attach
