A new whistleblower has come out.

One who received a medal from Obama, a top NOAA official, has lately come up with the courage, now that Trump is President, to tell us the truth.

His vehement objections to the publication of the faulty data were overridden by his NOAA superiors in what he describes as a ‘blatant attempt to intensify the impact’ of what became known as the Pausebuster paper.

This thread is for discussion of the underlying principles of political management of scientific research..... a sort of discussion of why "political science" is corrupted by grantmaker's motivations or organizational imperatives.

My solution to the problem of political corruption falsifying science is to do what we did with religious influence in politics in 1789. The Federal government, and correspondingly, each State government or lower government, and on the high side even the UN, need fundamental restrictions on imposing political will on rational human thought or emotional beliefs. A sort of wall against government influence in the human mind.

As long as we have "interests" with influence in government, there will be pressure to falsify education and science.

politicians will use any angle available to create public anxieties that can be exploited for institutional power enhancement.

We need to stop the political abusers.
 
well they climate worshipers have been told by the orthodoxy to not touch this one with a 10 foot pole. so they stick their hand in the sand and ignore this.

it is beautiful to watch.

The merit, or did-merit, of someone who was there, objecting, to the way data was being manipulated or used, is of course going to be hotly contested. The fact that someone says it happened is concerning. He risks his credibility going forward.

The fact that the data does not sit in a neutral archive not handled by govt representatives is itself concerning. How can we believe these rubes?
 
Pretty concerning to me that so much effort goes into promoting a political view that is going the way of the dinosaurs, really. Anybody who comes in here with a view for Trump really has to watch their step.....

I think it attracts some trolls, tbh, but it's pretty hard to tell who is thinking about their conduct as things seem lately.

So, Red. . . . I read the entire link. Nothing here surprises me, or affects my opinion. In fact, it is a great demonstration of the problem I outlined on the OP. How can we really achieve objective results with politically-motivated funding? It will always be true that the defenders of the "right" view or the "right" results will mount herculean efforts to discredit anyone who is not supporting the "right" view. That's why they are they, that's what they are paid to do.

I did not see a call for papers or witnesses to determine the merit of the case presented by the whistleblower. And indeed, just calling him a "whistleblower" gives the proof of the problem I observed in the OP.

It is not science when there is a "right" view to be achieved by the work.

In true science, a claim like that of Dr. Bates would be a reason to fund a complete review of the data by an independent researcher.
 
I saw a report earlier this week on Channel 5 about how this July was the hottest month in recorded history of Salt Lake, and then they demonstrated that Tooele and another city (I don't recall which one) did not have exceptionally hot Julys. Next they showed that both of these other weather stations were elevated four feet above grass. The Salt Lake station used to be elevated four feet above grass, but now it is three feet high and, instead of having the thermometer pointed horizontally it was pointing straight down toward gravel. And then they talked about how Salt Lake's average night time temperature had increased significantly since the implementation of this new weather station. Shocker.
 
Aha! Global warming is all based on the positions of the weather stations being 4ft above grass vs 3ft above pavement.

Relax everybody, CO2 is not a greenhouse gas. There is not more greenhouse gas in our atmosphere due to human activity. It is all just a matter of moving more weather stations from 4ft above grass to 3ft above concrete. None of the other data really ended up meaning anything.
 
Ugh climate change denial is still a thing?

Man how long are you going to keep your head in the ground? The effects of man caused climate change are obvious even today. At this rate, Florida will be underwater and the deniers will still be claiming that there's no evidence of man caused climate change.

Keep on rubbing that, deniers. Just like Dump actually win the popular vote and how Russia didn't interfere with our elections. Derp derp
