Something's definitely wrong within the organisation. When was the last time an executive of the Lakers has to come out and 'reassure' its fans that the org. and doing OK. That Jim Buss is doing a GREAT job, etc, etc, etc.

Seems to me that Jeanie Buss is really oblivious to the fact that putting her brother in charge of basketball decisions is cancer to the team. The Failed Dwight experiment. That Steve Nash trade really puzzled me. Honestly I don't know what they're doing.

I think it could be a while before they're back to where they were.

Sorry but if you google something like "Jeanie attacks Jim Buss" it will take you less than a minute to find a plethora of links from the last year where you can find the two fighting over the newspaper. So it seems that they have toned it down and stick to arguing in private.

Don't think that's oblivious it's rather representing your franchise in public and displaying unity within the front office to sell their product.

I also wouldn't rule them out. The massively rising cap will present them with opportunities. If they can luck/fail/smashmouth themselves into a top5 pick this year, watch out. If Randle turns out to be a good NBA player and the 2015 pick has skills as well, you have this exploding 2016 cap with Kobe expiring and both Randle and the 2015 guy on a rookie contract.

There's a ton of guys on the market that year and you could sign both Durant and Westbrook that year to max deals and still have something like $15-20M for a chemistry/rim protector/special duty guy in your pocket. I wouldn't rule that out especially if OKC continues to play the poor small town role while media releases stuff like they made $29M after the tax into the owner's pocket.

If I'm Westbrook's agent I'm like: You've seen that number? Their franchise tripled its value while you guys were here, so not only does the owner have an exploding stock of shares at hand, on top of that he made almost 30 millions and that's way more than the salary and luxury tax for Harden would have cost him.
Because Westbrook's agent knows he can't market his client from Oklahoma and Los Angeles is big enough to market multiple stars on multiple teams.

I think ppl are overreacting, they'll attract guys and if they can hang on to guys on rookie contracts that they can pay at a later point in time and circumvent the limits of the salary cap that way they'll do it. Only the Nick Young 3 year contract might bite them unless they can move it.

In other news, Nash is out for the season.

LOS ANGELES — The latest and perhaps last setback of Steve Nash's disappointing tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers has come. Nash has been ruled out for the 2014-15 NBA season due to recurring nerve damage in his back, according to league sources.
The Lakers later confirmed the news.
Nash, 40, had said he expects this 19th NBA season to be his final one. But he has not announced his retirement. Nash has not stated an intention of playing for a team away from Los Angeles and his children, saying in March that he would be done if the Lakers used their stretch provision to cut him for salary-cap savings: "That would be it. I'll either be back here or I'll be done."

I don't care where they argue. My point is if she's the President and has the Final Say (as this interview has confirmed), she wouldn't have let some of the things that Jim Buss did slide.

Like when they hired Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson.. haha.. I mean, c'mon now. That was one of the worst decision they've made. She said in the interview that she wasn't down with it but again, she let it slide obviously because Jim Buss is her brother. And now she's trying to put a brave face on the whole situation and come on TV to defend the decision?

C'mon now, who is she fooling?

C'mon now, who is she fooling?

The things I remember is her saying that she doesn't believe she's an expert at constructing an NBA team, that's why she let Kupchack and Jim Buss do what they thought was right.

She said she looks at the result and has offered a timeline of 3 years from now for whatever thresholds have to be broken by then. She said she pushed the timeline because she thinks it's bad to blame Mitch and Jim for Kobe and Nash getting injured.

Of course she's the responsible person for what's happening on the floor, she didn't deny that. She also said she doesn't agree with certain decisions but as a professional she wants to be hands off in these situations(unlike that Knicks owner punk).
And you know I outlined possible scenarios for them to return to respectability over the next 2 summers, which would be 1 year before her deadline she talked about.

Just because they've moved on from an public power struggle to keeping the dirty laundry in the house doesn't mean **** about her real thoughts about things. I just think the situation is way more complex than you realize.
She said she wanted to have Phil around and have him included but realized after a while that having too many dominant voices isn't good for functionality of the front office.

Probably she would have liked Phil take over Jim's position and have him work it out together with Mitch, but you know there's other Buss siblings owning shares of the franchise and that's politics she has to do in that situation not to get removed as the head of basketball operations in case that Jim in an act of retaliation lobbies a majority of vote amongst his siblings to vote her off...

This for example sounds very reasonable for me and I can see every party's position and interests.

I guess her judgement is that she'll give it more time so Mitch finds a way to handle Jim's "public concensus" lack of roster management skills or make him realize that him being there won't lead to winning himself so he resigns in a situation where he blames himself for the lack of success of his team.

Or maybe they all bought in to stealth tanking while tricking half LA to tune in for TBT Kobe, that's going to take place 3 times a week to keep ratings dependent local TV income high, while playing bad basketball, having a chance at #1 in addition to adding talent after Kobe leaves.

^^^

tl/dr, but I have some points to make:

1. This is the first time we've ever heard about this 3 year time frame thing. Even Stephen A and Skip had this expression on their faces "What? Never heard of this".

2. Does the 3 year time frame include the time they hired Mike D'Antoni?

3. Kobe's injury was brought about by him having to do everything himself. This is due partly to the lack of talent they had at the time and the way D'Antoni's runs his offense.

4. It was their decision to sign Nash who they should have known is too old. So really him being injured, etc, should have been well within the realm of consideration before signing him.

5. If you can justify every decisions by saying "OH because Jim Buss has a share ownership in the business - so let him do what he want", then I think it's time they sell the team, because that's totally unprofessional.

Personally I hope Jim Buss takes control of the whole team/operation and the Lakers spend the next 10 years not making it into the playoffs.

To me, she'll always be the only NBA executive who has posed nude for Playboy.

That's kind of like saying when ears were popular, if you ask me.

Waiting for when it becomes popular for a person to weaponize them self.

I wonder what it's like to root for a team whose president is an heir/heiress with questionable intelligence...........
