Corbin's role in Burks' development

David Locke mentioned how bad Burks is in the pnr and that Corbin spent two solid days working on moves with him and watching film, and that it made an imediate impact on the way Burks runs it. I've noted how bad Burks is at telegraphing passes in the pnr, and that he rushes them too. I'm excited to see how this turns out.

Said training happened weeks ago. We are already seeing the improved P'n'R play. Not to say he couldn't keep improving. But that story has already come to pass.

burks is definitely learning as he goes. However, every game he seems more and more under control. TOs need to come down, but ive been impressed with his versatility and his willingness to adapt. He just plays, no matter what his role is. I like that

I never saw it. Do you recall where?

I was hoping it was just the last couple of games since Burks is still telegraphing his roll passes and throwing them way too soon. I think he's been too unselfish a couple of times trying to force a pass when they were giving him the driving lane. That's probably a product of the game still coming at him way too fast, and it's nice seeing his growth in slowing it down. That'll be the difference in whether Burks becomes more than a bench player or not.

You haven't noticed Burks has become our second-best screen-roll player after Hayward??
What teams are primarily doing is forcing Burks away from the screen (which is what Phil Jackson's championship teams have historically done) and Burks has done a good job making that pocket bounce pass before they trap him and his bigs (Favors&Kanter) have done a great job positioning themselves to give Burks the angle to make that pass:

6 well-executed screen-rolls by Burks
Classic side screen-roll to Kanter:

High-screen -roll forced away from screen - hits Favors on auto cut to basket :

High screen-roll – 1) Burks sets man up then crosses him going away from screen 2) Burks splits defenders and pulls-up in lane (all-nba move)

Side screen-roll forced baseline – turns into pick&pop w/Kanter:

Side screen-roll again forced baseline - bounce pass to Favors:

Awesome stuff! Rep'd

Burks/Kanter pick n roll has actually had monster results. I look forward to seeing that develop into a strong go-to play in the future

Shouldn't the title of this thread be "Burks' development despite Corbin's role"?

Maybe Burks sucks *** and is a jamal crawford clone if he is allowed to play all the minutes people on here think he deserved from the get go. Maybe he is Dwayne Wade 2.0 though .... Nobody knows, but the fact that he is developing is good, I like to think Corbin has something to do with that.

We do not know either way since we are not intimately involved but I will give Corbint he benefit of the doubt. Maybe he is fantastic at developing players and then crap at rotations and in game adjustments.

I just find it obnoxious how he doesn't develop the young guys but when they show they are developing its all in spite of him. It doesn't add up.

Until recently he was not playing the young guys and that I do have a problem with. There is only so much you can learn in practice. Real world application, that can only be had in playing during games, is invaluable. At some point you have to give them the chance to implement what they have learned. All the DNPs Burks got and the games where Kanter got less than 15 minutes are just foolish.

If you develop them then deny them the chance to put it into practice, what's the point?

They are getting chances now aren't they? Granted injuries and what not, but still they are playing now, everyones back and Burks is still playing. Thats a good sign.

The question is, If mo and Al had not gone down, would they really be playing now? Isnt it their emergence through the team having no other option what got them to where they are, forcing ty's hand to at least play them some? I feel like if Ty had given them the chances theyve been granted through injury, they may have forced his hand much earlier... Which worries me.

I know I tend to play devils advocate but I know Corbin knows infinitely more about player development, rotations, what is going on with the team, who is ready to play and who isn't, and just basketball in general than all of us dumb asses combined. I guarantee he makes mistakes, but I when things go well he needs credit just like when something goes wrong its all his fault. Just trying to be the voice of reason, failing, but trying.

Voice of reason implies that the rest of us are unreasonable. Wrong. It's simply your opinion, period. I don't think anyone will argue with your assertion that Corbin knows more about basketball than any of us. He does, period. Unfortunately, knowing more doesn't mean he's right or that he knows that he's doing. There are plenty of people who know more than others in their respected fields but still may not know what they are doing or still may make poor decisions. As others have pointed out (1) Corbin could have played him more earlier and (2) but for injuries, Corbin may not have played him more, in which case he has hardly developed Burks. You may be right in there may be a method to his madness, but I would have liked to have seen Burks playing more before now.

Brilliant. You deserve a rep for this one, sir.

A little confirmation bias here Stoked? Young players grow, Corbin rewards them, fans blame Corbin for not playing them???

I just don't see how fans like you and PKM who thought Burks wasn't going to turn out (because he was a one dimensional chucker as Gameface succinctly put it) can now blame Corbin for not breaking him down and churning out an NBA product. All Hail Corbin!
