Way to start the season with a win. Yeah, it's only Ole Miss but still, on the road, SEC team... yeah, I'll take it.

I'm just thankful that our defense produced the game winning TD and we didn't have to rely on our offense to go punch it in. I guess that's kind of what an offense should look like Day 1 with a new OC, but they have to find a way to get the WRs involved more. Apo is big-time, but you have to throw it up there and allow him to make more players.

Defensively, you can only be encouraged. That O-line from Miss was hyped up and BYU did what they wanted with them. Our linebackers are beasts. Corby Eason is iffy at one corner, but Sampson came in for Hadley at half and completely locked down one of their WR. Soreson brings the wood from that safety spot, even more so than Andrew Rich.

We're going to be good, just have to finish drives.

That was a gift, Houston nutt Made some terrible coaching decisions in that game.

Who runs an up the gut running play on a 3rd and 20+ in tue first quarter of a 0-0 game when you are are at midfield, only to run a high risk hail Mary play in a 3rd and 20+ when you are deep in your own territory when you are protecting a 6 point lead and have maybe the best punter in the game.

Talk about bailing on your defense in a game where they held a team that was supposed to have a murderous offense to only 7 points through about 90% of the game.

Who would of thought Wynn would have a better game than Heaps?

At this point it's a tomato/tomata sort of thing.

Heaps 225 yards, 63% on 24/38, 1 TD, 1 Int against an SEC team

Wynn 101 yards, 65% on 15/23, 2 TD's against Montana State

I'll let you try and discern the major difference here.

I bet Montana State could beat Ole Miss.

Either way you look at it, neither QB is going to brag about their performance in these games. I was more than a little surprised at how bad Heaps looked in the first half of that game (I didn't get to see the second half).

Agreed, first half he was terrible. But in the second half he was nearly unstoppable. Bad interception, but aside from that he was terrific. 81% completions. 151 yards passing, with passes of 19 and 26 yards long. A touchdown. Five for five in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter QB rating of 248.3. https://espn.go.com/college-football/player/splits/_/id/501563/jake-heaps. If the defense hadn't gotten the fumble recovery for a touchdown, I was completely convinced that the offense would have been able to score another touchdown.

I thought Heaps performance was more because of play-calling, which was fairly conservative. I like Doman but it was obvious the players don't have a full grip of the offense at this point. Maybe just first game jitters. Lots of play-action and lots of throws to the flat. Felt like Doman didn't want to challenge Ole Miss 1-on-1 or maybe trying to ease Heaps in. Love the play-action but you gotta make them pay instead of throwing for 2-3 yard routes. I was actually surprised at how BYU was able to move down the field with such conservative play-calling drive after drive. Redzone offense needs some work.

Loved the defense but the secondary is suspect as always.

They are going to have to step it up to beat Texas.
I'm sure Texas will end up with more than 13 points.

The defense played well, and I started to see more of the safeties getting in on the action late in the game. They were good against the run, but I am a little worried about coverage.

Ya, loved the safeties coming up and hitting but very worried about coverage. Texas is in a similar situation with new coordinators but better talent. They had some youngsters do pretty well against Rice. Probably come down to who makes the least mistakes versus either team just deciding to win the thing.

They have a lot of deep threats too. No question that the Eason/Uale combo is going to get burned long a couple of times. In a way, I hope so because I think their backups are better players and the sooner we get them into games the better. Those two would be solid backups though.

Texas' QB had a 17/10 INT to TD ratio last year. Making him make quick intelligent decisions seems to be the way you handle Texas. Blitz party.

I hope you're right. I would love to see random blitzes from players all over the place.

I would also love to see more crossing patterns 8-10 yards deep from the slot, or a TE. That could get us some big yardage, and keep the safeties and backers off balance.

I do think BYU could do a better job of blitzing. I loved Bronco's old style of defense when you never knew when or where the blitz was coming. I know he's not exactly calling all the shots right now, but he's getting conservative.

I thought he was calling all the shots on D. Isn't he still the D Coordinator right now?

Can you smell that 12-0? Me too. If we're lucky this year, we'll get that coveted 3rd place trophy that Utah has been bragging so much about.

Go Cougs.

I believe you're right. Bronco is a good DC, he is probably still feeling out the defense. They will definitely need to play better vs. Texas, but the good news is, they can and likely will.

The defense played aggressive and very physical, which helps against their shortcomings in the speed department.

Unfortunately, a decent passing team should have more success against them. Hopefully the offense can score more points...

Two things I noticed, BYU didn't run any "Now" passes or screens.
Heaps missed two corner blitzes (that shouldn't happen with a returning starter). If he reads those, the receiver should be wide open for a big play.

After so much hype, I didn't see a better offense. It looked pretty Robert Anae like conservative. Heaps looked off. The timing was usually late. And the highly talked about African American WRs weren't getting open.

12-0? You will be lucky to win one of the next two games, not to mention TCU. Also watch out for Utah State. Didn't they pound your asses last year?
