Countdown to the Rubio/Gobert pick and roll being > the Stockton Malone pick and roll

Countdown to the Rubio/Gobert pick and roll being > the Stockton Malone pick and roll

I'm excited to see how Rudy and Ricky play together. I just want the season to start already!

Along with Dirk, Malone had the best big man fade aways I've ever seen, shot those rainbows later in his career.... elite. Gobert I think I've seen him attempt 2 jump shots. :o

His passing was great. Where those in pick and roll situations? How efficient where they? I am not questioning Malone and Stockton being better just if the pick and roll will be more efficient.

It's difficult to find the efficiency stats and usage, but during the Stockton Malone days I would bet the pick and roll usage was 4X what it is now. Stockton and Malone could run this play with high efficiency when teams knew it was coming all game, every game, for years. Stockton and Malone never missed the playoffs together. Efficiency rating is a small stat that does not tell the whole story.

Nope watched it all. Try again.

You have rose colored glasses. They were really good but most of what made them great was the longevity not the peak.

Statistically I think its a safe bet they run the pick and roll more efficiently. How did Gobert do in the pick and roll last year compared to Malone's best year?

It's kind of a stupid stat to use for comparison because the usages are so far off... if I'm a player that makes 2 out of my 3 shots a game and I play 10 minutes am I more efficient than the guy that goes 32 for 50 and plays 40 minutes every night? Stockton and Malone beat people with the pick and roll when the competition knew without a doubt it was coming. Malone won the NBA MVP twice in his two best years, so there's that.

The one thing Ricky and Rudy will have that Stockton/Malone didn't is the lob to the rim. That should be good for 3-4 baskets per game.

Even those MLA's by Rubio could result in points due to put backs by Gobert.

No doubt they were better players that was never a question.

The question is if Gobert who was the best big in the NBA at pick and rolls without a point guard who could run a pick and roll and Rubio who was one of the best pick and roll PGs can be better in pick and roll situations. My guess is they can. Mostly due to Gobert being a bigger threat rolling to the rim than Malone. I think they will be more efficient at it.

It wont be a small sample size like your above argument is claiming so that is invalid. It will be a large sample size across the season.

If Exum continues to develop offensively, he actually has a better chance to be an elite pick-and-roll PG than Rubio. Exum has an elite ability to get past his defender, or just blow by the entire pick/roll coverage all together. He can see and pass over the defense, or he can get all the way to the rim. The key for him is to be able to finish at the rim off his drives and shoot off the dribble. He can get these open looks anytime he wants them. He just needs to convert.

Malone was probably the best pick-and-pop PF in the league for several years before Dirk came on the scene.

Even using season stats you are comparing apples to orchards... it's a stupid comparison.

How so? Because Stockton and Malone will run more pick and rolls or less? What number of pick and rolls did they run per game? What number will Rudy and Ricky run?

Both will be high enough volume that the sample size will be a valid measurement.

Simple math.

Stockton >>>>>>>>> Rubio (regardless of what factors you choose to consider or exclude)

Malone >>> Gobert (regardless of what factors you choose to consider or exclude)

So yeah. No.

What part of math do you not understand?

I realized suddenly that I was preparing an actual argument. Holy **** work must be boring today to waste perfectly good wasted work time on this train-wreck of a thread.

Nothing you presented is math... So I guess it is hard to reason with your logic.

So if a player is better than they are better at everything no matter what. Got it.

That's why I think this should've been titled "The CP to DeAndre Jordan"
