D-Will Frustrated

This game was lost in the first quarter like a lot of our games lately. It seems like D-will got frustrated with players not being where he thought they should be. I think he had 3 turnovers in the first quarter off passes where he anticipated a player doing something and they didn't.

I think all of these slow starts are getting to D-Will because the previous Jazz teams he played with dominated the first quarter and ran a very sharp offense. I know it is on the rest of the Jazz to learn the offense better but I feel like D-Will sort of wants everybody to adapt to him and the Jazz system rather than try to adapt to the new players.

I think this is a big reason why the Jazz start so slow. The new players are focused on running the offense and D-will gets frustrated with them not doing what he wants and then the rest of the team plays worse and so does he. The only two that really have good Chemistry in the starting unit are D-will and Millsap and with Millsap injured it really showed.

Interestingly AK had an awesome game tonight and was the only bright spot. He seems to do well when he fells like the Man. Since everyone was struggling he fill in that role very well and even seemed happy despite being blown out. I think D-will needs to find a way to give other players more ego space.

If D-Will is true leader he will find a way to adapt to the new players and bring out the best in them, develop better chemistry, and not get frustrated so easily.

Thoughts?

Ok ok I just posted that cuz I still had it on my clipboard. I think you are right that D Will is getting frustrated, and I don't blame him. It seems Sloan's system is either the best thing to hit basketball since the invention of the peach basket or it is a steaming pile of rhino *****. It is tough to get used to and tough to execute. When they pull it off, it is a thing of beauty, when not, well you get slammed. Tonight they got slammed. I think some flexibility in the offense would help the newer guys, but who knows.

You're correct about the TO's in the 1st qtr. Deron's first TO came when Andrei stopped running down the lane - and Deron voiced his displeasure with Andrei afterward, motioning for him to keep moving. The 2nd and 3rd TO's came in pick-and-roll situations. First, Deron expected Elson to pick-and-pop and instead Elson sorta rolled (he actually went straight to the rim w/out looking for the pass) and the second time Fes popped out to the elbow (why I have no idea - not like he's a shooter) while Deron expected him to roll to the rim.

Another problem is Raja Bell's inability to fit into the offense. (The offense is a little different from when he was here in 2003-05.) I've always said when Raja takes more than 1 dribble bad things happen, and if he's not getting (and making) open looks he's not much use offensively. CJ Miles fits much better because he can cut hard, put the ball on the floor and make plays off the bounce. Obviously he makes alot of mistakes at this, but he atleast has that ability and that facilitates ball and player movement.

Finally regarding AK, he really struggled in the 1st-half (2-8 shooting) but had a great 2nd-half - making all 5 of his shots including three 3-pointers. Very streaky shooter so it's a shame that effort was wasted.

I agree that when the Jazz run their system to perfection it is a beautiful thing to watch but when they don't the Jazz can look awful. This has always been the issue I have with the Jazz system. I believe this is why the Jazz struggle in the playoffs because teams can adjust to the Jazz system and then their real weakness is revealed which is a lack of play makers.

In the NBA, a team needs multiple players who can create their own shot. The Jazz have DW and really no one else. CJ sometimes can create his own shot but he is too inconsistent. All the other players get their points through the system. When the system isn't working then the Jazz suck.

In their heyday, the Jazz had Stockton, Malone, and Hornacek and somtimes Russell. Today, all they have is DW and I am sure he is getting frustrated with having to carry the offensive load. Anyways, the performance last night was pathetic and took a lot of the luster off the road wins in Miami, Orlando and Atlanta because two of those teams got revenge. One thing for sure is that come playoff time visiting teams will not fear coming to SLC.

...frankly, Deron is a big part of our 1st quarter woes! Number one, it seems he needs a couple of quarters of shooting before his jump shot starts falling. Then he misses free throws generally during the 1st half. His passing last night was not good. I don't think it's so much the other guys aren't where they are suppose to be as much as Deron trying to be TOO FANCY! He tries to whip passes into small spaces that have virtually no chance of success. There's plenty of blame to go around....and Deron has to own up to his share of mistakes, too!

....and none of those guys was noted for "creating" their own shots! However, they were just better players, shooters and smarter than the group of guys we currently have on this team! If your looking for guys who can create there own shots....then scout out the AND1 League and bring some of them up to the big leagues! The Jazz just don't have any consistent shooters and they have a squad low on basketball brains! Possibly some of them are just "uncoachable" as well. All of them are overpaid, that's for sure!

Stockton was one of the best at driving into traffic and turning a fake pass into a layup, or finding a way to get a mid-range jumpshot off when they play broke down. Hornacek was excellent at moving around the perimeter and getting a 3-pointer off with defenders scrambling, again when plays broke down. And give the ball to Malone in the low post and just get out of the way. He would either find someone with excellent passing skills out of the block or get right to the rim wit a variety of post moves or hit a sweet short-range turn-around.

That is what I am talking about with creating your own shot. I do not think a player has to be a Kobe or Jordan, weaving in and around players like a fat lady at a crowded donut sale to get off a funky "circus-shot", but just someone who can with some regularity find a way to get open and hit a shot they can reliably knock down when a play or the system breaks down. Other than Deron we have basically no one. AK used to be able to do this, but that ability in him seems to have faded. So with only 1 1/2 players able to do this, we can't recover if they system is adjusted to or breaks down due to lackadaisical play or lack of execution.

We should trade Millsap for Aaron Afflalo and Chris Andersen. The offense would be so much better.

Jefferson is a nice piece to the puzzle. The Jazz just need one other player on the floor who can score without DWill having to put everything on a silver platter.
