Dante Exum Article on Hoopshype

This reminds me of critics of LeBron before he went to Miami. Sometimes your team just sucks. But wait, I forgot. In another thread I was told that great players are always great no matter who their teammates were. Huh.

AKMVP wasn't criticizing Exum for not winning, he was criticizing Exum for playing like garbage. As fish said, LeBron was great in Cleveland - somehow he was the best in the league despite playing with bad teammates.

Exum - 18, 4 and 4 on 44% FGs playing in the U19 against HS kids. Smart - 18, 6 and 5 on 42% FGs playing against the best college competition.

Combine means squat. I look at his numbers in real games vs M.Smart, A.Gordon and team USA. 7pts, 2reb, 0ast, 4TO. That's telling me more than what he did in combine. But if you are such a combine fan how about McDermott who is slow stiff outjumping **** by 2 inches?

Calm down, I was just throwing a scrap of info out there. The lack of info about Exum should be a huge concern. Seems like he is the riskiest pick at the top of this draft.

Apologies if this was already posted elsewhere.

Here are some numbers on Exum from an article posted today:

I was able to compare their performance in the U-19 championships with their translated NCAA stats (using those instead of raw NCAA stats to account for strength of schedule) and come up with U-19 translations. In general, the level of competition appears to be slightly worse than major-conference NCAA basketball.

From then on, I treated Exum's translated stats like any other college prospect. Because the tournament was so short (nine games, or about one-quarter of a typical NCAA season), they get regressed heavily to the mean. Still, Exum projects as an above-replacement player in the NBA next season. In conjunction with his age, that would give Exum the second-best WARP projection in the draft after Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart -- and make Kyrie Irving the only player in my college database with a similarity score of greater than 90 at the same age.

Here's a bit more, from Pelton, the stats guy:

Nonetheless, I'm tempted to put Exum second on my personal draft board behind Joel Embiid.

He goes on to say that Exum has a legit shot to be picked by the Bucks or the Sixers, and that he doubts Exum drops past the Magic.

The main concern Pelton has with Exum is his FT shooting accuracy.

Great work. Thanks for posting.
