Dante Exum .. Best case scenario

Basically what a few others have said. I think what probably happened is going to come out in the future sometime is that even though dante looks like his dad, he is actually the love child of penny hardaway and Gary Payton. And he will be better than both of them. I am a dante homer.

"He’s indeed far from the only one in need of a makeover here, but one can’t help but wonder just how powerful Exum could become if he were ever capable of harnessing Cotton’s recognition and level of aggression."

"Bryce is quick, but Dante has among the fastest first steps in the league for his size and may have one of the ten highest top speeds from end to end in the entire NBA. If he can bring his awareness and ability to enter and finish in traffic up to speed with the rest of his physical profile, he could quickly become one of the game’s most feared transition operators given his ridiculous length, speed and court vision."

I think Exum has great upside. He has the speed. He needs to learn how to use it to his and the team's advantage. Cotton had no choice. He has to use his quickness to survive at all. That's why he has so honed his court awareness, recognition of what is unfolding, anticipation, getting the jump. Exum can learn. And Quin Snyder, as far as I can see, is good at player development.

The article is a very good read. Although focused on what Cotton does, it is for the purpose of pointing out what guys like Exum CAN learn. In his case, he would be a very scary player.

I think the article pretty much lays out what needs to happen and if Exum can improve in these areas described in this piece, he will be what he needs to be on the offensive side of the ball. And Utah will be a tough out.

He reminds me a bit of Bugs Bunny from the 1996 Tune Squad team. Very chippy and aggressive on defense with a good attitude.
I'd say ceiling is Michael Jordan from the tune squad, and floor is the short quick point guard from the MonStars.

Hmm. Either Exum shrinks or this is that roadrunner guy...

Maybe you really do need to upgrade at PG. If so, and if Kris Dunn declares, his upside makes him seem potentially better then any guard on the Jazz roster now. But, he needs development to, to correct his abysmal turnover rate. He'll need time in the D League....

Worst case is probably current Shaun Livingston with a three-point shot.

Pre injury? That would be awesome.

nah I'm thinking like current Shaun. That's his basement. Good defensive PG with decent playmaking skills, will make a good backup on a playoff team.

Pre-injury Shaun is moreso my expectation. Or my hope.

You're comping him to the version of a guy who has lost his speed? If Dante gets injured this might be the case, but I think it makes sense to expect that a 19 year old's health is going to be one of his biggest assets for a while.

Remember I mentioned basement. I think the odds of this are like 1%.

I think he'll be averaging 12/5/4 by year three on pretty good percentages. Maybe George Hill-esque.

Because we play a version of Spurs-ball, then I'm throwing out this comp:

George Hill blended with Tony Parker

I think we can expect this (at some point in the next 2 or 3 years)

Yeah, but by that sort of standard you could set every single player's basement as wheelchair bound. I think a more useful definition of basement is, what is the lowest level of achievement that could be expected of them given their current capabilities. I think Exum's basement is far higher than the current Shaun.
