Dante Exum re-signed

This is very accurate. The Jazz FO was in a very difficult situation this year they had to decide what was best to do with Exum. In game stats are VERY limited but are they the best reflection of how to move forward. I think the Jazz looked at the other set of stats which shows a lot of promise and upside. The Jazz could have low balled Exum or waited for him to sign and matched which would have made him mad and we could have have a Hayward situation all over again. I find it interesting that people yell at the Jazz if the sit back and wait for other teams to set the market and then match saying that the should just figure out what the player is worth, and then when the Jazz sit are proactive and go do what they think is right people say that they overpaid and should have waited for an offer. The Jazz have a lot of faith in Exum. He has elite speed and length and possibly defense. a lot of the potential he had when we drafted him is still there. He has demonstrated a good attitude and ability to work hard through adverse conditions. The gamble is that this year may be an overpay but subsequent years become a bargain. We shall see.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Jazz are well over the cap. They can get well under next year if a top-tier FA comes a-knockin'. Paying Exum and Favors a couple million more changes nothing, except it avoids acrimonious negotiations and hard feelings. Both these guys come in well-fed and happy. Other players see the Jazz FO wants to be more than fair with the players. Win-win all the way around. Even if Dante never lives up to his potential, three years at $11m is hardly crippling.

Agreed. The cap will go up by more than the yearly value of his deal in the next few years. Won't hurt anything in the end.

Where does the data repository come from? And why is that bbref more accurate to you then the NBA?

You are right they are both based on per 100. But their calculations for NBA take in extra data that they have access to. They want their stats to be better than other places.

I find stats.nba contradicting itself quite often. Look at exum's shooting defense on his page vs the league page. Different numbers.

Exum’s contract is 9.6 million a year flat with incentives that can take it as high as 11 a year. So if doesn’t get better we have him for under 10 mill a year. His total can actually go down to 9.1 mill if he under performs

Lindsey strikes again, assuming injury happens again.

Wow.. that makes the deal even better.

I wonder how much of the incentives are based on #of games played (DNP CD don't count), vs on the floor stats.
Maybe a kicker for MIP or something.

To incentivize the contract as much as they did, they are daring Exum to get better and be healthy. I gotta imagine an MIP kicker would be huge.

That means he has 500k in likely incentives and 1.4m in unlikely incentives.

If that's true that's the max amount of unlikely incentives, I believe it's 15% of the contract.

Also incentives are typically deemed "likely" and "unlikely" based off the previous season. So those unlikely incentives may be a little skewed.

That could go to an arbiter to decide. My guess is a 500k likely would be something like the team making the playoffs.

oh that makes it much more easier to swallow. Wondering if incentives involves minimum of games played per season... which would be fair given his history... lets say he plays 70 games minimum he gets extra 1.4 mil a year....

Exum's contract was a straight over pay in this market. The Jazz are gambling on future potential here.

And this was always going to be the problem this year. Fair market value this year is so low, that some RFAs will end up deciding to gamble on taking the QO to be unrestricted next year in a better market. This is why I've said all along that he'd get a 4 year deal in the 8-12 mill per range.

I'm a little disappointed Utah didn't get an option on the 4th year, as they definitely gave X more than he could have gotten anywhere else this year, but it's much better than having him gamble on the QO.

Both Favors and Exum got paid more than their value in THIS YEAR's market, but by next year both these contracts will look just fine, and in Exum's case, could end up being a real bargain.

Further details were released. Dante will need to play at maximum efficiency to get the 11m. I'm much better with the deal now.
