Game Thread Dec 28, 2020: Jazz at Thunder

Added to Calendar: 12-28-20

This is actually a tough matchup for us. Horford can draw Rudy away from the paint. Dort can make life tough on Mitchell. Hill and Conley are probably a wash. We need Bogey to have a good game. We need our bench to provide the scoring punch.
I’d love to see us put Rudy on Dort and have him stay in the paint. If Dort beats you a few times live with it. Lots of teams have shooting bigs so need to try out some alternatives figuring the year to deal with it.

To do my part I picked up Hill and Dort for my fantasy league... they will be horrible tonight because of the reverse jinx. You are all welcome.

"We got some serious headcases on this board."

Don hasn't been great yet. Was solid in game one and showed some good defense on top of the offensive stuff. He pushed through in the second half of the Minny game but he's well below his normal standard (which is high obvi).

Would be great to see a breakout game from Bogey, DM, Royce tonight.

And DM didn’t seem to have a great rhythm in the preseason... it’s super early obvi so not worried. Tonight is a solid test because of the perimeter defense... should end in a victory.

We need to release the Shaq.
Currently last in the league in steals and deflections... so yeah we could use some of what Shaq would bring.

I missed the 1st half of TWolves game but I don't think I've ever seen Bojan play worse, it seemed to be more mental than anything. The long layoff may be effecting him. I hope he can get back into the swing of things soon.

I'd be fine with him taking a few of Royce's minutes. This isn't a knock on Royce, I just don't think he needs to play 35 minutes, like like he did against Minnesota.
In my minutes comment somewhere on this forum, I had suggested moving him down to about 26 minutes. Maybe even 24.

The trends on Royce are no bueno. His on/off stuff in the playoffs was real bad... first two games has been quite disturbing. Gonna watch him a little closer tonight.

Shaq needs some of those minutes... also Niang's early effort of defense has been pretty great. If he can match it with some of that volume 3 point shooting he could grab a couple of Royce's minutes.

At very least maybe cutting the minutes a bit sends a message that we need you to bust your *** or we go another route. Might also have him give you more in the shorter minutes.

That’s my philosophy. He was 20.4 mpg in 18-19 and 28.9 mpg in 19-20. Last year too high. Year before too low. In between is just right, especially if it gives us a couple more minutes for a different type of defensive option. And allows him more energy to play defense when he’s in.

I also think Shaq could cause some issues for backup ballhandlers and get us a couple easy baskets on the bench unit. Kind of like exactly what Minny did to us.

If DM and Bojan start hitting shots it solves some of the transition issues too. That extra half step to take the ball out of the net and inbound the ball slows teams down a touch.

Like tonight... Shaq on Maledon is a matchup we can exploit.

I think guys probably just enjoyed their Christmas holiday and weren't really ready to play.

I agree. He hasn't played great. To call him trash is ignorant. When he isn't hitting, he still takes the attention of the defense. People get open looks because there is a threat of DM even when he isn't hitting.
