Here are the defensive ratings for Jazz men via Synergy. Take it for what it’s worth. Lower is better.

Kanter: 178
Miles: 236
Hayward: 308
Howard: 308
Harris: 318
Tinsley: 318
Bell: 337
Favors: 359
Evans: not ranked (too little data)

Haha .. Jefferson better defender than;

Kanter
Miles
Hayward
Howard
Harris
Tinsley
Bell
Favors

Well science proves what my eyes think otherwise. Thank you stat geeks, here I thought Jefferson just was a bystander as people strolled into the lane..........sure is a ton of egg on my face, eh gents?

Take it for what it's worth..... Yeah it's worth two bags of crap

You're 100% right, these newfangled number things don't mean anything. I know what my two eyes see, and numbers are of the devil. Dig?

Let me try to alleviate the negative, holy ****, Al Jefferson is so bad and ranked better than X, Y, Z, talk. The numbers benefit those players whose original man does not score. So if Harris gets burned and his man scores, his score goes down (or up in this case). However, if he gets good help defense, and his man doesn't score because of the efforts of the big, his score goes up (down). This can go the same for the big who helps, whose man then scores. You're getting into three or four passes by then though. What this does tell you is what the shooting percentage is of a given players man on every single defensive possession. Transition is tougher to gauge, and this is by no means a hard and fast measurement, but it does have some worth, coupled with the eye-ball (which is deceiving as well at times, or at least its memory), but not completely negated.

Good list. But we must take into account the randomness rating per 48. Lower is opposite of higher:

Favors 558
Harris 134
Tinsley 650.9
Okur 431
Jefferson(Al) 801
Millsap 65
Jefferson (Thomas) 411
Watson 128

Take it for what's it worth.

Jefferson is a decent man to man defender its his help defense that struggles and that does not show up here. The opposite is true of Hayward, he helps a lot and then gets burned because no one covers him when he rotates. Jefferson is also boosted because Jazz double down on post players a lot making them pass when Jefferson is in.

Good points.

BS thread BS first post

My next one will be the pull-out-of-my-*** complete opinion thread that is a rating that has no bearing on anything measurable--so basically a rating using my completely subjective eye-ball test that cannot be refuted or challenged in anyway. If you refute it with stats of any sort it's "BS" because "my eyes" tell me differently. Numbers mean absolutely nothing, and any irregularity means we should scrap the whole thing rather than trying to understand what they're saying.

I detect someone mad .. not naming names though.

Not mad, but disappointed--not that people didn't say, "bravo, wonderful post, rep'd to kingdom come", but that the dreaded "eye-ball test", or the "stats-lie" refrain destroys anything meaningful that these stats might show, e.g., these stats measure the shooting percentage of the defensive players man, so why is Kanter so much more favorable than Favors (no pun intended). Does Favors totally overplay etc.? Is Favors really not that effective of a defender? He looks good out there, but what does that translate into? I personally like the mixing of numbers and the never-ending opinion threads, but maybe it's just me.

Well, what I guess we should take away from this is, we should always play man-to-man D with zero help/rotations when we play a "Burks, Watson, Miles, Sap, Jefferson" lineup. And play zone with lots of rotating and help D when "Harris, Bell, Hayward, Favors, and Kanter" play together ... ?

I just hate zone, hate. So I am disqualified from any objective commentary.

Maybe that's Ty's thought on it too, which is why our team looks like a deer in the headlights when a team goes into a zone and we pass it around the 3-pt line for 23.9 seconds until CJ hoists up a fade away 30 footer...

I'm not saying I hate seeing a zone. I'm saying I hate playing (on d) a zone. The rebounds you give up, the elbows .. it's a total ***** defense that says, "I can't beat you straight up."

So Alec Burks is the best defender in the NBA?
And Favors is the worst on the Jazz?

This is less believable than Newt Gingrich as president.

if i understand this post correctly, the lower the number the better? so al jefferson is a 118 and dwight howard is a 150? so in summary... al jefferson is a better defender than dwight howard? ummmm?
