Smart just seemed like a Jazz guy to me - tough defense, aggressive, scoring potential if not shooting.

The Jazz werent even a defensive team when they drafted Exum. They were just bad.

Some teams are willing to have a higher turn-over of talent (assets) on their rosters. The Jazz seem less willing to do this. If they're going to trade for a guy like Mirotic, they want to know that he'll fit into their plans and cap strategy longer term. They're considering things like minutes distribution, pecking order, shot distribution, chemistry, etc.

Another factor here is that the Jazz were looking to trade out Rodney Hood rather than have to retain him in free agency. They were likely in discussions with Cleveland at the same time for Crowder, a player that they liked. So they flipped Hood for Crowder without giving up a 1st-round pick.

You can think of it this way: the Jazz used their assets to get Jae Crowder and Grayson Allen instead of getting Mirotic. Now maybe the Jazz could have gotten both Mirotic and Crowder, but then there'd be a bit of a log-jam at the forward spot, and less cap room for 2019 free agency.
 
This is the easiest question asked on this forum in quite some time. We drafted Gobert in 2013. A couple weeks later, we just let Millsap walk. As it turns out, Millsap was the absolutely perfect fit next to Gobert. His comprehensive skill set, range and great defense would have set our front court for 6 or 7 years.

Letting Millsap walk was easily the biggest mistake especially at the cheap number he took in Atlanta. Millsap has been and was twice the player Mirotic ever thought about being.

This season....The mystery of Jonas and Bjlinka.

Overall...betting on Gor-dang Haynerd. Jazz made several decisions based on him. It was Lindsey's job to know and plan for contingency.

Which would’ve netted us what? Another conference semifinals appearance at some point? So what? Our timeline is now and the next five to seven years. Not then to now.

I don't like to speculate on "what could have been" draft picks.

Millsap and Gobert never got to play together and they could have been a perfect pairing. And we had Millsap in hand.

But we had to keep the "Core 4" together.
KOC should have never never never drafted Enes.
 
I thought Sap left at just the right time for both himself and the organization. He wouldnt have to be coached by Ty Corbin anymore and would become a all star player in the east. I was happy for him.

But. I'd grade him a B/B- as an exec. He's made some small and big mistakes:

Not trading Millsap for something knowing full well he'd walk.
Catering to Haywood with the Hill trade - how much better would we have been if we'd kept Prince?
The Kanter pick
I'd argue the Exum pick
Not maximizing cap space beyond just having it

The Jazz could contend. But, they need a third star and more scoring, especially shot creation.

The Kanter pick also wasnt really that bad.

That draft kind of sucked to have an early lotto where we picked. Yeah Walker and Thompson are great, but no one was considering them in the top 5.

The Burks pick in that same draft was a much bigger blunder considering Kawhi was a very real possibility there.

Yeah, Sap would have likely never became a 3pt shooter in Utah, at least not while Ty was there.
 
With all due respect, anybody who thinks Favors was ever better than Millsap at anything is a moron. Millsap was an All NBA Defensive team player. He was arguably the best player on a team that won 60 games. He has no weakness. He can shoot, post, drive, pass, rebound and defend. He would have been perfect next to Gobert.
