Punch Bowl Re-Filler
So now, knowing most of the pieces to each deal (Utah is still owed a pick via GS and Denver gets the Knicks 2014 1st rounder), which team got the better deal in return for their superstar, Denver or Utah?
To refresh, here's the recap of each deal:
Denver (incoming): Galinari, Chandler, *Felton, Mozgov, Knicks 2014 1st round pick, GSW 2nd round picks in 2012 and 2013.
Denver (outgoing): Anthony, Billups, Balkman, S. Williams and A. Carter.
*Felton later traded for Andre Miller and Jordan Hamilton.
*Billups was waived by NY prior to 2011-12 season.
Utah (incoming): Favors, Harris, Kanter (NJ's draft pick), GSW 1st round pick
Utah (outgoing): Williams
I'm just going to throw out the GSW 2nd-rounders and the miscellaneous players from the trades. It basically comes down to Chandler, Gallinari, Felton and the 2014 1st (probably a non-lottery pick) for Denver vs. Favors, Harris, Kanter and a probable late lottery pick in 2013 for Utah (projecting GS to tank and retain their pick in 2012).
I always thought this was a slam dunk in Utah's favor, but Denver received a lot of value for Anthony. Play the GM and pretend you could go back in time and accept either of these deals for Deron. Had we not had the fortune of winning the #3 pick in the lottery, we would have likely taken Knight at #6 and I'd be inclined to give the most value to the package the Knicks gave up to get Carmelo.
