Derrick Williams

First he's in trade rumors around the draft, now Minnesota was prepared to offer him along with with Martell Webster as part of a trade package to Portland in return for Nicolas Batum. (See https://basketball.realgm.com/wiret...rick_Williams_Webster_In_Batum_Sign_And_Trade)

I'm not sure if Derrick Williams was a disappointment last season or not, but clearly Minnesota seems willing to move him.

Question is: Would the Jazz be interested in Derrick Williams, and if so, what should they be willing to trade to Minny for him?

Footnote: Before you all jump in with the obvious, assume Minny doesn't want Al Jefferson back.

Foot foot note note: What's with #2 picks being disappointments---Derrick Williams (2011), Evan Turner (2010), Hasheem Thabeet (2009), Michael Beasley (2008)

It goes back further than that: Marvin Williams (2005), Emeka Okafor (2004), Darko Milicic (2003), Jay Williams (2002), Tyson Chandler (2001), Stromile Swift (2000), Steve Francis (1999), Keith Van Horn (1997). Heck, you can go back to the Bowie kid that Portland took at #2 way back when....

Derrick Williams for Enes Kanter, would you do it?
Not just no, but hell no. Kanter already has an elite skill - rebounding - and showed plenty of signs of improvement in other areas over the course of the season. If Derrick Williams has an NBA skill, he hasn't shown it yet.

At the #2 spot, teams feel like they missed out on the 'Sure thing' talent and feel compel to take a chance on someone who could 'potentially' become a 'star' in the league (Williams, Beasley, Turner, Thabeet, etc, all fit the bill).

Even this year with MKG - again he has the potential to become a HUGE star. But without that offensive weapon - he could also become a bust if he can't develop that jump shot (Ronnie Brewer anyone?).

I still like Derrick Williams. The problem is that is a PF not a SF and Kevin Love plays all the PF minutes for the T'Wolves.

Then you've got to ask why did they draft him knowing that he's a PF and expecting to give Love that big contract.

Why didn't they just take Valanciunus or Kanter? They seemed to like those European players too... so it's quite puzzling.

Must be the curse of the #2 pick.

LOL

A lot of people thought he could be a Sf/PF combo player. There were tons of people on this site that wanted him just for that reason. I don't understand why Jazz fans still want him now that it is pretty obvious that he's a PF only type of guy.

Yeah exactly right - it quickly became apparent that he's just too slow/heavy/big to chase around mobile SF's. A lot of commentators called it, but it's still puzzling as to why Minny couldn't get it right.

Only trade that makes sense would be Millsap, and while I'd be tempted (under the assumption that we're either going to have to pay Paul a ton to stay, or lose him for nothing), I don't think I'd pull the trigger.

At least Durant has avoided the curse of the #2 pick. As for getting Derrick Williams, we would have 2 Derricks and 3 Williams on the team. For that reason alone, let him stay in Minnesota for now.

Would you trade Raja Bell and the Golden State pick for Derrick Williams? We wanted more for the GS pick, but at this point it could be in the 10-14 range next year and it would be great to drop Raja. Personally, I would do it, but I don't think most people here would.

Who wouldn't do that? Khan?

I think a lot of people here want to get a prospect PG with that GS pick.
Raja and jazz future first, yes.
