What's new

Deseret News - Alec Burks is hoping frustration of last three seasons is behind him as he looks to t

even if Burks regains his athleticism, he's never proven to be a good player really. He does some flashy things but he's historically never really been that good % wise at the rim. If he re-invents himself as a higher volume 3pt shooter / attack the basket on a closeout guy he could be useful but as a creator i don't think so. Keeping Ingles is far smarter
Yeah. It seems like Burks has never developed many basketball smarts. That's my major complaint about him.

Edit... Oops, I thought you wrote that Ingles was smarter, but I see now that you said KEEPING Ingles was smarter. Oh, well, keeping Ingles is smarter because Ingles is smarter. Ha ha

Keep Burks if they see signs of his old self over the Summer. Then trade after his stock rises...otherwise, trade him.

I think we need to move him this summer. The Jazz are just moving in a different direction from what he provides and his play style. And we need to clear the cap space his contract is taking up to be able to re-sign other guys. I like Alec but I do think a move is best for both sides.

And honestly I don't think trading him would be as difficult as some around here believe. He's 25, he's been a double digit scorer most of his career, he's an instant offense type off the bench. For a team in a rebuild or on the verge of playoff contention who just needs a guy off the bench who can provide some points he's a solid option. 10 million per year for a couple years isn't a huge price to pay for a role player in today's NBA.

Cap space isn't an issue. Utah won't have space to sign other team's FAs and we can go over the cap to sign our own. The only issue really is staying under the LT.

I don't think Utah will dump Burks as long as they can stay under the LT, but it's really a hard call to make.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Luxury tax is based on team salary at the end of the season so assuming that is the case could we not keep the team together (over the off season) and go over the luxury tax and when and if the likes of Burks regain their value then ship them off in return for something closer to their worth? Rather then shipping them off for peanuts are having to add value to get someone to take them.

I believe in Burks being traded to make way for better.

So yes I wish the Jazz/Burks frustration comes to an end. Nice guy, thanks for being a Jazzman, good luck and bye.

its sad to say, but nearly all of burks' pre-injury gameplay relied on his 48" vertical, and sneaky fast first step. It seems pretty evident that he may never get that explosiveness back, thereby forever rendering him a sub-par player. :(

48" vertical?

I don't think Alec's game fits in with what the Jazz are trying to do. He relies too much on iso sets, and doesn't fit well within the motion offense Quin has created here. He needs to learn from iso Joe when and how to iso and how to blend into the general flow of things. Not sure if Burks can turn that corner.

48" vertical?

typo - meant to type 38 off the cuff.... that said i just looked it up, and before his injury he was recorded at almost 44 inches vertical at P3, so the typo wasn't far off.

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/jazz-guard-alec-burks-has-reportedly-added-six-inches-to-his-vertical/ said:
He is considered one of their more “elastic” athletes. He reached a vertical height of 12′ 2.5″ during an approach this summer

His standing reach is 8'7 --> 12'2.5 = 43.5 inches. he was springy.

If you think the Jazz can find a team interested in trading for Burks then do it.

But I highly doubt a team can be interested in him after the injuries he had in the last 3 seasons. That's why I say the Jazz have to try to restore the player.
This is spot on. I would probably trade Burks for nothing but I'm not even sure that deal makes itself available. So if we have to include assets to dump him, I'd say no. See if he can redeem himself.

I think this entire board is overreacting just a small bit. Enes Kanter injured his shoulder, and came back to his offensive form. Alec Burks came back midway into the season and was out of sync with the team. Just about a year ago this guy was 24 years old throwing tomahawks on DeAndre Jordan and Alex Len. His corner 3 is still popping, and he played pretty reserved for the last half of the season this year, and played timid and secure after coming off almost an entire year being injured!

One fallback season is not justifiable of Burks. He was averaging 14 ppg for the 2015-2016 season! You have to give him by the trade deadline to show his worth. Especially now that it's the offseason and he can work on refining his game, he could come into the next season a refreshed, and really make forth to putting together a renaissance year.

Jazz are trying to establish identity as defensive minded team. Burks was by far worst defensive guard/wing we ever had even when he was injury free. I think his days with Jazz are numbered despite his "Houdini" touch around the rim.
