Diamond in the Rough: 2014 Draft

Alright guys, so let's say we somehow got the 8th pick in a 7-deep draft (credit Spycam) and the following players are GONE when we pick:

Wiggins
Jabari
Embiid
Randle
Exum
Gordon
Smart

My question is, who do you think will be the "diamond in the rough" for the 8th pick?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the past 10 years there have been players who in hindsight should have gone in the top 7 pick such as:

Paul George (10th pick)
MCW (11th pick)
Drummond (9th pick)
Lamb (12th pick)
Kawaii Leonard (15th pick)
Klay Thompson (11th pick)
Larry Sanders (15th pick)
Bledsoe (18th pick)

... and so on and so forth. So I think there is a good chance there is a diamond in the rough there somewhere for us in the 2014 draft as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

My picks would be:

- Kyle Anderson (great 3pt shooter, playmaker, feel for the game)
- Aaron Harrison (clutch genes)
- Nickkkk Stauskus (knock-down shooter)
- Willie Cauley-Stein (true 7 footer, athletic pivot/shot-blocker)

Thoughts????

I think Vonleh is the obvious 8th pick in that circumstance. I'd start him at PF and bring Kanter off the bench. I'd also look at the Euros--Hejonia (sp?) and Saric and take a peak at McDermott. Also, Stauskas and James Young.

Also, don't overhype Aaron Gordon just because he hit a few big shots. I'd take at least a dozen other players ahead of him.

That said, I don't think we'll fall to #8. But we could end up #6 or #7, in which case we're looking at Gordon, Smart, etc.

I have a feeling you're rooting to get this guy. Amirite?

Hahahaha.. he's one of the guys I'm looking at very closely, yes!!

Is he a reach? May be. But wouldn't it be nice to have a knock-down shooter at the SG spot for once, ala Hornacekkk??????

Yeah, but as in previous drafts, the obvious pick isn't always the best pick. If we were to re-do the 2011 draft, Klay and Kawhai would have gone top 5 instead of where they were picked (both outside top 10).

My concern with Vonleh is I don't see him having an elite skill at the next level. If I pick Nikkk Stauskus, for example, at least I know what I'm getting.

Kyle Anderson is a great 3-point shooter? Have you ever seen him play?

I'm not even going to bother comment on the Harrison twin, I've talked about that enough.

I would probably go with Vonleh, but I'm not crazy about anybody at that slot.

He is shooting 48% for the year, albeit with not many attempts cos he's looking to pass most of the time.

Yeah but that's what great GMs do, like when Bird plucked Paul George with the 10th pick. Last year with MCW with the 11th pick whom everyone seems to missed.

I bet there's someone there around the 8th pick that's gonna surpass expectations.

Kawhai looks great playing next to Duncan, Parker and the Spurs' floor spacers. I don't think he's top 5 in that draft. Burks would look like the new Manu on the Spurs, tbh.

2011 draft was pretty average, I would probably rank them:

1. Kyrie
2. Faried
3. Klay
4. Kanter
5. Burks/Kawhai

He's only shooting when he's wide open. Again, have you seen him play much?

I'll put it this way, if he was a great shooter, he'd be shooting more. He knows his weaknesses, which is why I like him as a player, but he is not a great shooter.

Fine.

So other than Vonleh, are there any other players that you like for the 8th pick?

I'd probably go Vonleh then WCS then KA then kill myself.

Yah, great picks.

You don't think Nikkk is worth the 8th pick? You're mostly concerned about his defense/physical toughness right? But what if he's Curry-lite type shooter in 2-3 years time? Isn't he worth the 8th pick?

Curry was picked 7th BTW.

I don't see it.

Vonleh definitely seems to be grouped in the top 8, but I wouldn't be able to get excited about that pick. I just wouldn't.
