Do Jazz get room exception or MLE?

This has been discussed in a couple of different threads, with different answers. Do Jazz get the room exception or the MLE?

Here's the relevant part of the salary cap FAQ: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q25

To me it seems like it hinges on when the trade is made official and where the Jazz's salary stands on Jul 1... but I could be completely wrong on both counts.

From what I can tell we cant get over the salary cap to complete the trade. We have to pick up Favors and we will be at 106. We probably pick up Neto as well which puts us at ~108. That is under the salary cap so we can complete the trade, which means we get the Room MLE once we spend up to 109 which is one more min salary.

I think it is possible thought to make a trade before FA that pushes us over the 109 based on spending up to 125% on the trade. That could give us the full MLE.

Either way we do have the BAE.

This should be a moot issue because it should be patently obvious that waiving Favors should be a given, but apparently it’s not. Apparently “OMG PER!”

If we can maneuver to get the full MLE then I think it is a much smarter move than waiving Favors. Also there are a lot lot lot more stats than the garbage PER stat that support how good and important he has been to our team.

But if we cant then I might lean towards waiving him and creating more space. I think if we let cap hold go and Favors we can generate 19 million in space.

But having Favors for 16.9 million plus the MLE of 9.2 million is much better and smarter move. Favors contract will also be needed if we want to make a trade for a good player next season as well if we go that route. Otherwise we have no real salaries to trade if a all-star level player becomes available. Which is a more likely way to get a good player than FA with only 19 mil.

What is BAE?

Keeping Favors’ salary with the expectation of trading it would raise the inevitable discussion about how whoever it is we’re looking to trade for isn’t as good as Favors.

Is there any minor thing we could do to get over the cap? Can we use part of our TPE to take on one of the Lakers’ young guys like Wagner or Bonga to push us over the cap?

Not at all a cap-ologist, but if there’s a minor move to be made that would push us over before July 1, we should do it.

If we go over the cap, we can’t acquire Conley. The whole deal is contingent on us being below the cap.

We have to waive Favors. $19 ****ing million to play with. Instead we get the novelty of a really good backup C, and the pressure to start him.

It isnt the expectation of trading it but having it as an option. We cant sign any big name player in FA this year, but we could with Favors and someone else's salary to get there. But that is only if we arent fitting well together for some reason, our FA PF that we sign is filling in well enough to replace him and Bradley looks somewhat ready, or a really good trade pops up. But if things are going well and nothing better pops up we are good to go and its great.

That we’d have to match salaries if we were over the cap, and that the trade as constituted isn’t salary matched, thus requiring us to have and utilize cap space.

We don’t have cap space until July 1st. We will not have the full MLE.

This is my understanding of the situation as well. Unless the deal radically changes we will only have the room (which I have foolishly decided should be spent on Stanley Johnson).

Seems like another trade must be in the offing. Don’t see how we plug the holes and add necessary depth w/ just $4.7 mil and minimum contracts.

Problem being, I don’t really see what we have to trade that anyone would want other than Favors and Exum, and Xenu knows the FO aint parting ways with either of them.

The DN says we have 4.7 million to spend on free agents (it sounds like Favs is being kept.) My count is Gobert, Bradley, Favors, Niang, Conley, DM, Royce, Raul, JIngles. That leaves six roster spots and two two ways to fill. Sounds to me like a lot of minimum contracts are going to be filled out.

I still don't really understand this well. Couldn't the Jazz renounce Rubio, etc., RIGHT NOW, and be under the cap now? Then complete the trade right now instead of waiting until Jul 6. What's the advantage of waiting until Jul 6?

No, we cannot renounce them now (it's still last season effectively). We renounce their cap holds once FA starts up.

Isn’t July 6 being the date when trades and signing a player become official a league mandate/rule?

Trades can be done as soon as a team's season is over. The new season in some sense is considered to begin on Jul 1, or maybe on Jun 30. (I think salary cap is set on Jul 1, and free agent discussions/agreements can begin on Jun 30 now.) Free agents can't be officially signed until Jul 6, after the moratorium.
