do nba teams miss the playoffs on purpose to get higher draft picks?

Think about it. The NBA is rewarding failure with high draft picks. Consider the temptation for management. And if true, how do you suppose they go about losing? Isn't this bad for basketball and the fans?

Ya they do all the time. Thats the entire reason why there is a lottery, to try and reduce the incentive's of losing since now losing isn't necessarily a guarantee for a better pick, just a higher chance of a better pick. Team's start sitting their better players in favor of worse players, especially if the worse players are young and have more potential and could be a piece of the future. Suppose that the Jazz had the record of Bobcats or Wizards, they would sure as hell play Burks and all those young guys more.

Of course they do. In the NBA, the teams that win are actually trying to win, while some teams are clearly not interested in winning because they are trying to build their team by acquiring better players through the draft. The lottery is designed to discourage teams from intentionally losing because the team with the worst record in the league is only guaranteed a top four draft pick. This is not the system used by the NFL or Major League baseball, as both give their top overall pick to the team with the worst record.

Damnit, I knew this day would come. I mostly agree with Blackswordsman. Only problem is the bolded part. I actually think that would lead to more wins. The young guys have been powering the current win streak. Hayward, Favors, Burks and Kanter have all had break out games and increased playing time and the Jazz are on a 3 game streak.

Unfortunately the GS is doing this now. They traded their best offensive for two injured players traded Jackson for an inferior player, shut down Curry, I wouldn't be surprised if warriors management are secretly hoping Lee goes down.

Draft picks, particularly lottery picks create hope. A team can sell success or it can sell hope. Success takes a plan, hours of dedicated work, good decisions and a little luck. While the lottery can be arrived at quickly with very little effort. Given the current American culture, it suprises me that more teams aren't trying for the lottery.

I don't think players or coaches purposely miss the playoffs, but I think management may do certain things to ensure it. Players naturally play less hard when they realize they are on a sub-par team and end up going for individual stats. Which is a key reason KOC wanted the Jazz to be in a playoff hunt.

I was thinking about this, and I would be kind of pissed if I were a GS fan. Years of horrible teams, and now they're tanking. The fans last night booed the owner during Mullins jersey retirement, yelling "we want Monta". It's possible that they could end up getting another AlFarouq Aminu, Wesley Johnson, or even an Ekpe Udoh. Would that be worth tanking. Fans get sick of losing, and if management openly supports it for basically half if not all of the season (after years of losing), it could get ugly. So it better pay off or team management risks pissing the fans off.

I used to agree with what you are saying until I saw wright heave a 30 footer with 20 sec on the clock as they were trying to close out a win.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner. Cyrone was able to tie his post back to the Jazz, and he is correct. I agree that KOC didn't want a situation where a bunch of young guys put up impressive numbers on a crappy team because it might force the Jazz to sign them to lucrative 7 year extensions. Then the players might never evolve or progress and still be the same player 7 years and several million dollars later. That could really suck.

PS- The fans booing the GS owner was great. More owners and players should get booed, because it seems to me they all take the fans for granted. But if the GS fans want to get the owners attention they need to vote with their butts and tv screens.
