The more pot heads in Utah the better.
Uh, I'm Canadian. I think it's entirely reasonable for African Americans to not be patriotic. We Are definitely not all like this. Hell, english is my third language, and I was born in Germany, but you won't find an opportunity where Im not yelling our national anthem as proudly as I can when the moment arises.

We're talking about Josh Howard, not some random African American. The same Josh Howard who made millions sucking the great American ***.

Josh Howard may be a pothead and I'm not sure how well thought-out his reasoning is here, but if his biggest problem is that he refuses to participate in the jingoistic, ritual farce that is the performance of the anthems. It's a sports event. The Mavericks do not represent the entire USA, nor do their opponents here. An NBA game is hardly the sort of formal occasion that calls for the playing of the national anthem.
I don't stand up for anthems, either. I guess the terrorists have won, then.
It's also the same Josh Howard who grew up in a bad neighbourhood in Winston-Salem without a father. Making millions as an adult hardly makes up for a bad childhood. It's not as if Josh Howard was born into millions.

No white person has ever had a bad childhood either. Fail!
As for disrespecting the national anthem: To me, the national anthem is symbolic, along with our flag, for all the men and women who have sacrificed blood, sweat and lives to protect the rights and freedom we enjoy on a daily basis. Anyone who uses the national anthem or our flag as a political/personal statement is showing they don't remember or appreciate what has been done for them. It's a very selfish approach, to be honest. I also think it does more harm to your position than helps.
So none of you white folk think that black people on this continent were dealt a rough hand? Which continues to be pretty rough? You'd all trade places with an average black teenager in America or Canada?

Jeff McDonald: Hearing it is unlikely Josh Howard gets the full $5 million mid-level from anyone. Twitter
1) It's not news that he won't be getting the MLE.At less than the full mid-level, I'm ok with signing the guy.
EVeryone deals with different situations in any number of ways. Let's say someone kill both your parents then hands you a million dollars. Is the million dollars enough for you to ignore what happened to your parents? NO one handed any athlete millions of dollars they earned it. Now if Howard doesn't feel a jump out of his shoes patriotism to a country that treated his ancestors as dogs. I think that he is justified.
