Does Al Jefferson know what a lay-up is?

I am starting to wonder if Al was once assaulted by a rim or something. He sure seems to be afraid to dunk the ball. If I am almost seven feet tall and I have an open lane to the rim, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm not pulling up for a wussy 5 footer that only has a 50/50 chance of going in. I'm going in strong and making sure if nothing else there is enough contact for a foul.

this makes me wonder, does anyone know when he grew? maybe his major growth spurt came at an older age, so he's continuing to play as he did when he was more of an average height - because he just doesn't play as "big" as he looks.

also, didn't he come right out of HS? If he was so tall then, he could probably shoot right over people but if he went to the basket he'd risk getting called for a charge. Seems this is called more often at the high school level, esp. if there's a mismatch in size.

Hey, OP, can you make this thread into a poll, too?

I want to vote on it.

Last night against the Cavaliers, Big Al gets a pass from Deron in the middle of the key and he's six feet from the rim. There is no one in front of him and out comes the push shot which hits off the back of the rim. I couldn't help think of this thread. He really needs to learn to take the ball to the rim in those situations or Deron is going to have to start yelling at him like he yelled at Gordon.

^ All of the people whining for Bozzer....

How pathetic of a memory that you all have to think that Bozzer could do more inside than AJ. Bozzer was BLOCKED CONSTANTLY down low in the paint!!!! Plus, he was a rebounder ONLY because he called off teammates. Bozzer was fail. Once AJ figures this offense out more and what Sloan and DWill expect, and Memo can get back in spreading the floor for him, we'll see the dunks.

Haha! That is awesome. Going to have to rent that movie now.

Saw this in an old article from November. It's not specifically about the layup issue, but Al's game in general. From Kevin McHale:

-----"The ex-Celtic great, a Hall-of-Famer who knows a little something about post play, said Jefferson needs to stop swinging his outside leg so wide when he posts up on a play he calls the "okey-dokey" move, which usually results in a hook or an up-and-under move.

Flailing the leg out too far makes Jefferson drift and take more difficult off-balanced shots, McHale pointed out. He had the same habit with the Timberwolves.

"Get to driving with that right leg and going up and no more fading," the player-turned-GM-turned-TV analyst said. "And get to the offensive glass."

I don't know enough about post technique to say I've seen his first point, but Al does have a tendency to settle for fades which Harp likes to point out. As to the second point, I've definitely seen it. Al's not lazy by any stretch, but he does tend to get caught spectating (waiting to react) when somebody else is shooting. He needs to be going to the bucket in those instances trying to create the ORB, not waiting to see which angle the ball will take off the rim.

Had a dream last night where I offered Big Al $5 if he went straight at the next center he faced. Some other dude in the dream offered him $20 if he made the bucket. Big Al wasn't very interested in the offer.

Tommy, were there any naked girls in the dream?

I see you, Big Al!

Minnesota defense, Im glad he figured out who he was playing in the 2nd half. Great job on D though.

Awfully huge difference between Jefferson's first and second half performances, IMO, cannot even be explained by Hollinger, the stat geek. I really do not know, maybe he likes to play with the score in favor of opponent throughout the most of the game.

He's just miffed that G-time is best known for his rap than any of his play. See, according to Dwill_PwnasaurasRex, Gordon Hayward was the man. He was all over anyone who even dared question the #9 pick. When he had a good summer league, he again reaffirmed his position and basically called Gordon the next Dirk Nowistki. Now that that comparison is rather... Humorous. He's ticked and needs to tear down somebody. His target today is Al. Even though CJ sucked, Raja chucked, Deron pouted, Millsap played like a 2nd rounder, Fess was lost, Memo coming back, Price and Watson looked like Captain Crunch, he singled out Jefferson. When the entire team sucked tonight, he singled out Jefferson.

Thanks! Nice agenda. Can we just blame everything on Jefferson? Maybe even the economy too?

I wonder if some of Al's injuries have taken a toll on his athleticism? His play has been disappointing. But not as disappointing as AK's lack of motivation to earn another contract, Raja's play, CJ's inconsistency (yet he's been by far our best wing), and Hayword's play that makes Mo Almond or Kirk Snyder look like all stars....

That Dwill_Pwn guy was awful smart for being right about Hayward.
