What's new

Does anybody have kind of an '06/'07 vibe going into next year?

I like the way this year's roster is shaping up, love the potential of the core-4 and expect the team to wrack up 45-50 wins - but IMO there's a huge difference between having a bunch of good players and having one of the 8-best players in the league you can run your offense through.

I don't think this team has anyone to match the 2006-07 Carlos Boozer. Boozer was really really good, a top-8 player in the league that season, and Memo had one of the most "clutch" seasons in Jazz history. Deron wasn't a "star" but he was still a really good PG capable of putting up 25&10 on a given night. In tight-games down the stretch the Jazz were able to execute their offense with some unbelievable offensive efficency and in the playoffs the pieces came together and fit pretty well.

As with most Jazz seasons this year I expect them to suprise the "experts" who generally ignore us but I don't think you can have drastically high expectations until you see the improvement of the core-4, how the Williams' fit in and if the offensive execution will improve with Corbin given a full-training camp. I'm cautiously optimistic.
2007-08 Jazz team was better.
Don't forget the Jazz made the WC finals because GS upset the #1 seed. Could we see a repeat of the Jazz getting the #4 seed, winning their first series and then drawing the #8 team in the 2nd round? Not likely...I don't see any team that's projected to be in the lower half of the playoffs upsetting OKC, LA Lakers or San Antonio.

The 06-07 team was an offensive juggernaut that was clutch with Deron, Boozer and especially Memo hitting many, many big shots in the playoffs and regular season. We just don't have that level of guard play or a clutch 3 pt shooter big man. So to make up for our offensive inconsistencies, we need to play stellar defense.

IMO we will be better than last year, but so will several teams. We plugged a gaping weakness in our defense at SF with Marvin Williams. He is worlds better than Howard/Carroll/CJ. At PG I think we got a better fit with Mo, but I see it as our weakest position on the team.

The keys to the season are if Hayward and Favors keep improving, if the new pieces (Foye, Mo and Marvin) can successfully integrate into our offense fairly quickly and if we can find a way to get key stops. If all those things go right and we can avoid injuries to our key guys we could very well make a deep run into the playoffs.

Personally I expect a team that is a few games about .500 and fighting for a playoff spot.

Does anyone know what rank our offense was in the 2007 season, or how many ppg we averaged as a team? That offense was obviously much prettier than ours, but Im curious to see how far off we really are. I feel like we could potentially be better defensively, though.

Side Note: Boozer averaged 21 and 12, at 56% from the field that season......

Jesus.

7th most effective offense in terms of pp100, and also 7th in points per game at 101.5.

this past season we were 4th at 99.7.

Boozer was a bonafide star that year, top 15 player at absolute worst. If we could've kept that Boozer for a couple more years as Deron also turned into a star who knows what could've materialized....

If by 06/07 you mean we havent heard of Obama yet, then YES, make it happen....please...

But no, we are no where near that team, IMO. Not even a chance they surprise us like that this year. The two best players that year are far better than anyone we have at this time. AK was still , meh, decent,a nd Memo was hitting clutch 3s.
At best, Sap is our AK from that year (except with way more undeserved jazzfanz love), and we have no one close to the other 3.
I do look forward to this season but to compare it to that year isnt realistic, IMO..
