That's the kind of deal that's interesting
Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. He doesn't have to be credible to have a good point. Why would a team give up a huge package for a player that could leave in free agency next year?
The Spurs are one of the only teams that could have enough cap space to take into the season to R&E Lauri. Is he right though? He is saying that the fact that most teams can't do the extension that we and the spurs can do means he is less valuable.
That is correct information whether the guy is credible or not right?

We can’t officially do it until August 7thOK, here's another question - is there a valid reason for postponing R&E with Lauri besides potential trade? Can we do something with that capspace that is better than re-signing Lauri?
My point being - if we don't hear anything about R&E pretty soon... it probably means we are indeed looking to trade him.
Just an example from the recent past - the renegotiate and extend with Clarkson was agreed on July 2nd last year.
Most teams cannot do a renegotiate and extend. You have to have cap space right now in order to pull that off because you have to increase his current salary before you can extend it at the higher number. Most teams don’t have that cap space and would have to wait out his last year and THEN hope to resign him as an UFA. San Antonio could do it now, but I think the idea is that they have leverage because other teams wont pay as much because he’s possibly a 1 year rental. However, the Jazz can extend and renegotiate, and DA is cold enough to tell them to get lost. Either the Spurs pay a godfather offer, or the Jazz should wait until after they renegotiate and extend his contract themselves. Is he right though? He is saying that the fact that most teams can't do the extension that we and the spurs can do means he is less valuable.

Realistically? No way.Can we do something with that capspace that is better than re-signing Lauri?
Oh that's... unironically convenient I guess...We can’t officially do it until August 7th
Yes if they take the cap space into the regular season which they then could extend him after 6 months.I ****ing hate extension ****.
Can someone just tell me (and cite, ideally) if Lauri could receive the renegotiated extension if he’s traded to a team with cap room this off-season? Or is there a rule that prevents the receiving team (like tenure of a certain length on the new team) that essentially nixes the possibility outright?
They can, but only 6 months after the trade. So they have to take a risk either way.I ****ing hate extension ****.

Unimportant detail: in his RFA year, he was getting no serious offers and just flapping in the wind for a month. I was one of the only (if not THE only) people here being loud about how the Jazz should get him on a maybe/probably weird sign-and-trade (probably ultimately using Bogey in some fashion and if necessary).Oh that's... unironically convenient I guess...
They would do their due diligence beforehand I’m sure. They can, but only 6 months after the trade. So they have to take a risk either way.
Yeah no question about that. They would do their due diligence beforehand I’m sure.
Okay, so that’s basically a non-starter because a team needs to be at or above the salary floor by the start of the regular season to receive the LT disbursement which is like $20 million in cash or some ****.Yes if they take the cap space into the regular season which they then could extend him after 6 months.
That isn’t true. They could be above but still have 14.1M to use on Lauri. Which is enough to get him close to a 30% max.Okay, so that’s basically a non-starter because a team needs to be at or above the salary floor by the start of the regular season to receive the LT disbursement which is like $20 million in cash or some ****.
Bummer.
I really don’t understand all the restrictions with extensions.
Nice call, I still wonder what that team could’ve been if we would’ve changed the supporting cast around one more timeUnimportant detail: in his RFA year, he was getting no serious offers and just flapping in the wind for a month. Ultimately, he was acquired through - you guessed it - a weird sign and trade. One of the pieces of the deal was a weak 1st rounder and the Jazz had just sent a protected 1st to dump Favors.
TLDR; we probably could’ve had Lauri with Gobert and Mitchell and I get bragging rights for believing in him and recognizing the opportunity.
