What's new

Draft night 2017 might be the single biggest turning point in Utah Jazz history.

This is a very accurate post, but here's why I think losing Hayward is a big deal for the Jazz:

Lindsay and this organization are really pushing the narrative that Utah doesn't need to apologize for being Utah when it comes to Free Agent recruiting. They're trying to implement a swagger that basically says "We're one of the most solid franchises in the NBA, we have title aspirations, and we are located in a city that actually has plenty of perks regardless of what type of lifestyle you're looking to live".

Problem is, it gets much harder to sell that idea when you can't hang on to one of your own. I think it's very important for the Jazz to be able to hold onto a guy that they've drafted, developed, and invested A TON of time and resources into. This is a franchise that have had multiple players refuse to come and play for AFTER they've already been traded for. It's a franchise that didn't dare wait for a decision from Deron Williams because they knew he was going to walk. It's a franchise that's never had a superstar player actually choose to come play for. Getting Hayward to choose Utah is a huge victory on several fronts.

Very good post. It would really suck to lose him. I hope he stays, but we will see. JM12 - how bold would you get during the draft? Would you consider trading Hood or even Favors?

Jazz trade: Derrick Favors, Rodney Hood, Dante Exum, 24, 30, 2018 OKC first round pick

Bulls trade: Jimmy Butler

Chicago would have picks 16, 24, 30 in the first round of the draft this year. They also get an extra first next year. Hood and Exum are going to be RFA so they would be guaranteed to keep them if they want. Favors is a risk-and-reward option for them and at worst is an expiring contract.

Utah gets another All-NBA player to pair with Gobert and Hayward.

I wouldnt give Hood and try to keep 30th pick.
Butler + sign Jrue Holiday and Jawun Ewans for backup.

Hopefully DL is extremely bold. The right coach has been picked, the player development has happened, the playoff experience and a 1st round win have happened. Now is the time to swing hard and fast.

DL needs to have another compelling player on roster besides Gobert when he approaches Hayward and Hill.

Man oh man, I'd love to just sit, watch and listen to the war room for the Jazz this offseason. There has to be everything from grand slam plans to apocalypse plans. And everything in between.

Hope fully DL delivers and the Jazz role into next season with Gobert, Hayward, Hill and another allstar on the wing or at the 4. Or even upgrade the PG spot

GObert, Hayward and Lillard anyone?

McCollum maybe?

If he doesn't want to be here that's fine with me. Honestly he is good but we have gotten about all we can out of him. I am excited to boo his *** off.
Our record is pretty good without him too. (Even won the playoff game he missed)

If he leaves then maybe he and us will find that he looked better with the jazz than he really was and he will regret leaving.

I dont really see them selling that angle. It's more of "We are a great city to raise a family in". It's not like DL is talking about how lit the nightlife is.

There's 2 players that I think would count as legit superstars that I think might actually be attainable for Utah, and if they actually are, I'd be extremely bold if I was DL. My 2 scenarios:

Paul George- I think if Boston is going to look to move assets in an effort to make a splash, it's for Jimmy Butler. Then they go and try to sign Hayward. I think George can be had by Utah because any team with the assets to get him are petrified that he's a 1 year rental. I wouldn't be mad at the Jazz if they moved Hood and Favors plus picks to acquire PG13. Yes it's a huge gamble, but it's probably enough to compel Hayward to return. Gobert/Hayward/and Paul George give Utah an honest to god chance at winning an NBA title next year. Maybe that's enough to sway George to sign long term?

Damien Lillard- Portland has a lot of salary locked in to two players that are semi redundant plus some really bad contracts scattered across the roster. They almost have to move either Lillard or CJ in an attempt to create a more balanced roster as well as trying to get a team to take a bad contract or 2 off their hands. Again, I wouldn't be upset to see Utah part with Favors and Hood in a deal that netted Lillard.

I think Hayward and his agent look at that and say "he's a one year rental, then what"? It is a gamble IMO. Lillard is by far the better choice IMO. He is far more likely to stay in Utah.

I'd rather have Lillard trade the farm for him. Let Hayward walk.

Or have both. It is not an either or scenario.

Approach Hayward (and Ingles) in free agency and say - look, we have Gobert and Lillard and we want to win. Sign on and we can push for a top 2 seed and the WCF this season.

Then you have 3 killers in your starting line up and one of the leagues best 3 point shooters in Ingles. And most likely JJ.

The only asset Utah has right now that could bring back Lillard is Rudy Gobert. We aren't getting him with a bunch of mid-level assets and crappy picks. That's a pipe dream.

Shhh!!! It is the offseason so let me dream lol.

I'd love to see them make a deal for PG13. Think that's exactly the type of risk they should be taking. If they could pull that off, Utah would become media darlings and everyone's "dark horse" contender. Keep everyone healthy and add Paul George and this team competes with the Warriors - especially if any of their star players get hurt in the playoffs (like every other team this year.)
