Drafting by KOC

Where would we be with a better drafting GM?
2004- Worst of them all. Took Humphries, Snyder and traded 21st pick; passed on:
Big Al, Josh Smith, JR Smith, Kevin Martin, Trevor Ariza.

2005- Great draft year

2006- Good draft year but traded Brewer

2007- Took Morris Almond, passed on:
Aaron Brooks, Aaron Afflalo, Marc Gasol, Glen Davis. I know the Jazz talked a lot about taking Affalo with their first round and Big Baby with their second rounder but didn't do either.

2008- Took Koufus, passed on:
Ibaka, Batum, George Hill, DeAndre Jordan, Mario Chalmers. Imagine the Jazz with Ibaka or Jordan

2009- Took maynor(Good pick but traded him), passed on:
Collison, Taj Gibson, Casspi, Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Marcus Thorton. The big miss here was Blair who the Jazz wanted to fall to them and didn't take him. When he fell to us, I was 99% sure we would take him, but we didn't

2010- Took Hayward(Not sure on this pick yet), passed on:
George, Patterson, Henry, Bledsoe,Fields. I think George would have been a better pick. He can shoot, is extremely athletic and a good defender. Hayward is a better passer and ball handler but time will tell

Will the drafting ever improve? He has had his ups with D will, Millsap, Miles, Evans. Sad thing is 3/4 were second rounders. Then he traded his 2 of his other 2 good selections in Brewer and Maynor

good lord. You can do this for every team in every sport with a draft. It's 100% pointless and worthless. KOC is no worse than most teams making picks.

Also with how he's playing this year and his GF may have to put Humphries in the same category as Brewer *solid pick but traded*

This is like saying that Portland should have taken Kevin Durrant instead of Greg Oden. Well no ****. Hindsight is 20/20. But know one knows how these kids well pan out in the NBA until there here and playing for a few years.

Also could've NOT traded with the Jazz and have DWill instead of Webster who is now on Minni. I'm trying to remember all the picks the trade included but every player Porty drafted due to that trade is no longer on the team.

I think its pretty safe to assume that players were acquired to fit the Sloan system and not the other way around. I mean as a Jazz fan, did you ever wonder about Sloan or KOC making statements that the team was not very athletic compared to other teams and that because of this we "had" to follow the system or else.

Well, it's not like the ****ing players were forced on us. The front office and the coaching staff are to blame the years and years of stiffs that have come through here...

The Jazz "passed" on a guy that wasn't even in anyone's mock drafts last year. Rich.

Portland could have had Michael Jordan, Dwill and Kevin Durant. Instead, they got Bowie, Webster and Oden. Talk about hindsight.

I know hindsight is 20-20 but KOC is being a lot more than me to not make these mistakes. I know that it all comes with the territory. KOC is being paid to put the best team he can on the floor with what he has to work with.

AND they thought it wise to throw the biggest contracts allowed in consecutive years for players the Jazz found at Big Lots (Millsap) and the trash can (Matthews). They were right on both, and the Jazz were right on one.

I was saying they should take Durant at the time. So, go me.

The only pick I would have outdone KOC on significantly is Humphries instead of Big Al. I was screaming for Jefferson.

I was screaming for Big Al and Josh Smith in 2004,
Affalo and Almond in 2007
Hibbert, Jordan, Ibaka and Chalmers in 2008
Gibson, Collison and Blair in 2009
Aminu,George and Sanders in 2010.

KOC sucks at drafting in the first round, bar an exception or maybe two. To say other GMs also make mistakes doesn't make KOC's drafting record any better. Let's not be in denial that way; KOC's first round drafting in the past decade has just been awful.

I think the Jazz are very conservative drafters, low-risk/low-reward, at least in the first round. In the second round, they seem to take a few more chances on athletic talent and draft for longer term. Case in point: Koufos over DeAndre Jordan.

The Jazz also have relatively late picks in the first round, tend to draft for position and lock in on a few players each year. They figure that these players they draft aren't going to get much court time anyway unless it's a position of need.

The Kris Humphries over Al Jefferson thing was excusable since Humphries had talent and a track record in college. He just didn't turn out to be a heady, motivated player. However, the Jazz should have known that Snyder was a headcase who couldn't shoot, whereas JR Smith was a headcase who could shoot, and Josh Smith was so athletic that it didn't matter much if he could shoot or not.
