Of course hitting the 3 in an actual game is another story, and some might say anybody can hit 3's in practice; but any basketball fan that knows a shooter when he sees him would tell you that he is way above the average bigmen on knocking down the shots with a soft touch. I mean, WAY ABOVE. And after the surgery, this seems to be his perk to contribute.
If Ty uses him to set himself up in 4 or 5 positions a game to try the 3 (not to mention, following some decent scrimmages and work-outs), and if Kanter did it, it would create amazing space for the team compared to what space is already given inside right now. Everybody who says "this is the try-out year" is right and this is just another reason to try it.
In addition, people seem to be thrilled for Kanter to show his beyond the arc skills. Locke interviewed him in the Media Day and asked if he was ready to use the 3 point shot or something like that and Kanter went "I've made 3's before" then simply and jokingly cried out that Locke was unable to cover his 1st career 3 pointer soundingly enough. I think this is a hint for his mental readiness for getting set up in 3's.
Just like any intelligent coach, Ty has to worry about Kanter not getting lazy on posting up as he gets healthier in time, when he develops the mid-range and outside shooting and sees them as "easy money". Otherwise, the team gains a perk, when losing another.
