Espn's Ric Bucher says its a "matter of when, not if, a deal [will] be struck"

here is just an excerpt from Ric Buchers article.

"When the negotiating committees began exchanging proposals in earnest last week, several league sources assured me it was a matter of when, not if, a deal would be struck. Some even suggested the owners already have much of what they want and are simply looking at how much they can squeeze out of the players at this point.

The one thing that stood out in all those conversations is that no one ever talked about what the owners “need” to make the league viable. They talked only about what they “want.”

That, to me, is the essence of what the agents are saying to their clients: these negotiations aren’t about the league’s future. Only yours."

This excerpt from Sheridon is also interesting. it can be found on the same page as bucher's article :)

And given how yesterday’s letter from seven of the league’s most prominent agents has opened so many eyes to what has been offered so far, it is time for Stern to back off. If he proposes a 52/48 split, it’ll get ratified. If he goes to 51/49, the ratification vote may come down to a hanging chad or two — a risk Stern is probably willing to take. It it’s 50/50 (including a starting number that represents a cut from the $2.17 billion the players earned last year), he is risking his professional legacy on a single, solitary percentage point.

I do not expect the owners to put their best offer forward today when the sides met at a Times Square hotel. Stern doesn’t play that way. His “last and best” offer to save the scheduled Nov. 1 start of the regular season probably comes Wednesday or Thursday. But even he must realize that he has more to lose than to gain by continuing to play this game of his like a lawyer instead of like an athlete.

I posted this over on the General NBA forum. Artest says lockout is done. Some other twitter comments are floating around supporting the same thing.

"MettaWorldPeace Metta WorldPeace
Yay No lock out"

"Lakers smashing Let's go !!! I'm so happy!!!!!!! I love the NBA!!!!! Ball time!!!!!!"

Haha, RonRolled. Guess he was playing a really mean prank. Negotiations still on going...........

LOL; Artest is still pissed he was the first to get booted from Dancing with the Stars this season...

Bucher also said there was a 99% chance Kobe had played his last game in LA. I agree the season won't be lost, but games will be missed at this point.

at this point the fans need a representitive to stand up as a 3rd party to the players and owners and tell them both our demands as fans and that we are united as strong as they are. our list of demands are that if they dont come to an agreement immediately that this is what will happen as a result of their lack of respect for the sport and us fans. NO FAN will buy any NBA merchandise,NO FAN purchase an NBA direct tv package or NO FAN will purchase a ticket in any NBA arena OR WATCH any game on tv.a total boycott of the sport even if they decide to play half a season or whatever else they decide. this is the last and only warning to the players and owners end it now or us fans will end it for both of you for good. signed the fans

I agree. We, fans should take our basketball watching and supporting talents to Europe and China. See how long those overpaid bitches would last playing in empty arenas.

I don't see the lockout ending anytime soon. Unless the owners have been completely bluffing, both sides are still miles apart.

Hmm--I wonder if he thinks that the Lakers will use their "amnesty" provision on Bryant--or that Kobe's flirtation with playing overseas might be used as a transition for him into an international career, albeit at a lower salary (possibly compensated for by additional promotional endorsements).

I don't think that Kobe would have seriously thought about leaving now if the owners had offered up a palatable agreement by now. If Kobe bolts, all owners--not just the Lakers' owners--suffer, as well as the NBA fans. Like him or hate him, Kobe puts butts in the seats and eyeballs toward the television (or computer screen).

Do you always come across as a whiny *****?

Poor NBA players. Instead of making 30 million they'll only make 15 or 20 million.

Sacrifices sacrifices.

Now shutup and come to watch me! I don't care if you have to sell your house or go without feeding your kids!

We earn a lot of money, but we spend a lot of money too!!!

I'm perfectly down with giving the NBA a big 7up yours. It's disgusting how certain segments of our society feel entitled to millions for playing a game while so many are working two or three jobs to make ends meet. We can live without you folks. Have fun filing for bankruptcy and discovering that you should have gone to college.

I'm hearing so much contradictory crap I'm not sure what to believe. I want to believe they're fighting over 2 or so percentage points (which IMO should be easy enough to compromise on), but it's hard to believe that when the players are walking out on future meetings.

no salmon hobo, that whining you heard was your mother last night ,then I kicked her out and sent her home to whine to you.

You rode the lil school bus to school ,and I waved to you as I sped by on my Harley.thats why you have over 6000 post and most of them are bullying nonsense jarble that can only be decoded by other 5 year old nosepickers.
