What's new

Everyone needs to take a deep breath. The only games that matter are still a long way off.

The recent games haven’t changed my opinion on this team. Nothing that has happened this season has changed my opinion. Still a very good team, but also still the same team that has gotten absolutely embarrassed in the games that matter.

Don doesn't seem to want to be a system player. He wants flashy passes (often lead to turnovers) and to force the ball. JC is even worse.

Early Don would play within the system and "get his" when the offense didn't produce a good shot. That is the DM I want to see. The offense moves so much better with him out. And it seems to get worse and worse.

That said, the offense tends to break down with defensive pressure in the playoffs and DM and JC are the only two that can consistently create outside the offense.

I loved Jerry's offense, because it caused so many defensive breakdowns with all of the cutting, backscreens and movement. Simply wore down opponents. Outside of Stock, Malone and Horny, those teams had a lot of just ok players yet the system made them succeed. It was also fun to watch (and opponents hated playing against it).

I agree about Don not being a great system player.

Playoff basketball sees system basketball thrown off to the wayside. Defense and offense changes. Don excels in the playoff atmosphere, and everybody always forgets that.

"Gobert is bad at offense" is the laziest most inaccurate take of all time. And soft? Jesus christ.

It's not being objective. IT's being stupid.
Outside of setting screens and catching high passes leading to dunks, Rudy is a bad offensive player. How could you say otherwise?

He's not a great passer. He can't dribble. He can't shoot.

Rudy is a phenomenal defensive player who is very limited offensively.

Our poor offense with him out has been overshadowed by the abysmal defense. Watch how much more effective Conley, and the entire team and system are, when he’s there vs. when he’s not.

But the things he does well are so good that it makes up for his limited ability elsewhere, and by a large degree. His screens are simply phenomenal. His rolling gives his screen partner a wide open shot or he gets a dunk.

Honestly, without Rudy, I think Quin would have been fired already. Quin was touted as an offensive mastermind when hired, and when that didn't happen, and he had the luck to have Rudy step in, somehow the narrative changed to him being a defensive genius, which is laughable. Rudy is the anchor on this team defensively, and the cog that makes the offense go.

We definitely need Don or someone like him in the playoffs, especially with the current sets that break down in the playoffs. With Don, we still score enough to compete. The defensive philosophy and lack of commitment on defense by the entire team is their fatal flaw. The last few games should erase any doubt that Rudy was the problem on defense in the playoffs. The team should defend like Rudy isn't there to clean things up.

Do you get extra points for scoring points in fancy ways or something? His screening and rolling is one of the most elite offensive tools in the NBA. Very few players make players around them better on offense the way Gobert does and to top it off, he's also extremely efficient himself despite being on a very poor passing team.

Gobert is ****ing great at offense. How many players in the NBA score 2x as many points as FGA's?

Look, everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I dont like Mitchell, but I don't lie about him being bad at things he's good at. I dislike him because I hate the aesthetics of his game and he visibly does not care about defense. You probably dislike Gobert because you dont like the aesthetics of his game, but you try and form some kind of BS argument about it being about his production. Like Mitchell is a simply average passer (often unwilling) and not a very high IQ offensive player, but he's still an amazing offensive player. I just dont like the style.

The league's leading rebounder and best defender (3x DPOY, likely 4x now that the world is seeing how **** the rest of Utah is at defense) is soft? Like what in the hell are you even saying?

Outside of shooting and getting fouls, Mitchell is Trent Forrest without the defense. That line of thinking is dumb.

Rudy sets so many screens, has an elite level conditioning and is often the only rim pressure in the game. He is not a great self-creator but for his usage, he is an incredibly efficient offensive player who makes everyone around him better akin to pass-first PGs like Rubio or CP3.

Because our entire system runs around the only things he is capable of doing.

Then we get to the postseason, and none of that stuff works nearly as well.

Then that guy we have who most everyone around here bashes keeps us in games.

They also looked great in some of those games that matter. Lets not forget that

And you guys getting so upset -

I don't want to trade Rudy or Don. I just saw somebody whining about Don again so I wanted to point out that we don't have a perfect player on this roster.
