Because we watched Alec Burks for the last 3 years be perpetually injured after getting extended.
Hood doesn't put himself in danger of injury every game like Burks does.

and those lists doesn't include the new influx of players that will be drafted. (no list now as players haven't declared)
And Rodney Hood is better than 75% of those players. Plus a good deal of those players are still on rookie contracts and are just up for their options to be exercised, which they will be, so they arent competing for free agent money.
If Rodney has a good season, he is getting paid a lot of money.
my point with the rookies is that they will eat cap space and roster spots
Utah should just automatically max Hood, just in case he becomes really good.
Remember how many Jazz fans have criticized the FO for not maxing out Hayward after a mediocre season? Well, here we are again. Don't wanna take any chances of offending Hood in case he becomes really good.
We should max everyone from now on, just to be on the safe side.
Yeah, there were no circumstances surrounding the cap that make haggling over a million dollars completely ridiculous at the time of the Hayward negotiations.
Yeah, and there's no chance that even that much could have been a bad contract if things hadn't worked out like they did. Also no chance matching could have been a big mistake.
Anyway, the captain hindsight experts around here have convinced me: When in doubt, everyone gets a max.
Hayward wasnt an injury concern. At worst he was just an average starter.
Hood is injured constantly and his worst is a mediocre bench player.

Based on their qualifying offers, I'd probably try to extend Exum and wait on Hood. See how well Favors recovers this year and decide if he's a part of the future. If Hood blows up, the Jazz can just match his contract. I'm not sure that the amount saved by extending now will be significantly more than he'll end up getting in a depressed free agency market this offseason.75%? Okay, that leaves about, what, 20 guys and only eight teams are expected to have cap space? Not to mention, of those eight, how many are going to have more than 12M (very low estimate) to even sign Hood or any one of the 25% of players you say are better than him?
Get the point now, Einstein?
