Extending Howard?

Very few teams will have any interest in Howard unless he is a key piece in a stretch run. Still not sold that I want him back. Horrible shot selection at times but getting better.

I don't get it, when a player is starting to play well, suddenly we want to trade him away? I think it's because of the alleged reluctance of players to come and play for the Jazz, instead going to a big market team. Somehow the Jazz need to get a San Antonio like reputation where players come here because they know they will be winning and when you win in the playoffs, the world watches. Tanking games or trading players to get into the lottery is a very temporary solution because the picks will just leave after four years, we've seen it already, and a lot lately in the NBA.

Howard has been something of a surprise. I think he is doing better than any of us expected. If he keeps up and we can sign him for a decent amount I say extends him a season or 2. Way better option than CJ right now, and going forward.

Hmmmm.... I'd be weary resigning this guy already. Especially if he's only using Utah as a stepping stone to a much larger and longer contract in a market that he really wants. We've already experienced how much hell a player can put on a franchise when he doesn't want to be here (Boozer and Duron).

Not going to happen, and it shouldn't. He's been a real nice addition for this season, though.

The Jazz gave him a shot and more importantly gave him minutes. If that means anything to him, I'm sure he'll stay if The Jazz make him a compettive offer.

If that doesn't mean anyting to him - then we probably don't want him hanging around anyway.

I follow your logic but essentially criticizing a guy's character for not being loyal to a team who gave him a shot is insulting to that player who could be traded, amnestied, or chosen not to be re-signed (see Wes Matthews not being matched) by that same team.

If Howard keeps showing play like he has been this season shouldn't KOC rush with signing until he pushes his value too high?
I know 7 games is too early to start warming up the ink but this is definitely something worth considering if we want to keep him in Jazz uni. I haven't seen player like him on this team for a long time on SF position.

I reckon something like 5-7 million per year for 3 years with 3rd as team option would be great.

7 is too much, if he agrees on smthng like 10-12 for 2 years or 15 for 3 , then its ok, but just because he played good a couple of games, doesnt make him the best SF ever. And maybe he is just trying to prove he is still a valuable player in the league, who knows how he will player after signing the contract

I wouldn't mind extending him one more year, if that's even allowed, at say the full MLE. He'd come off the books at a time when we'd need to re-sign a lot of our guys, could start while our rookie 3, presuming we draft one, comes off the bench, at least early on, and could be a hell of an asset to trade at the deadline should a team need a guy like him at a reasonable price. I'd consider an additional year too (so two more beyond this season) but wouldn't be crazy about it.

He isn't going to be interested in a one year extension. He will trying to get a 3 year deal next year.

I like Howard, especially at 3 million, but there is no chance of keeping him for this cheap next year and beyond. KOC knows this, and will likely cash in his winnings at the trade deadline, whether the Jazz are in the playoff hunt or not.

Everything surrounding Howard situation makes one thing clear; the Jazz are going to get a lot out of him this year, and after that, some team is going to regret signing him. My crystal ball says some contender is going to eat AT LEAST his last year on his next contract.

Howard has been terrific. What's sad is 99% of the board didn't even like the signing.

Really, people didn't like the signing?

I guess I wasn't paying attention. It seemed like a low risk/high reward sort of thing. And we desperately needed more size on the wings.

The board hated it. The vast majority didnt think he would bring anything to the team, would just impede development of the young guys, be a bad influence, and that he was just a chucker.

Again, why is this sad? The guy sucked the last two seasons.

#1 I always liked the signing. He has proven talent, his public issues were early in his career, and it was a small risk (1 year @ $3 mil) to determine his health.

#2 The thread title sounded like a name of a *** movie.

This.

You see this sort of thing happen constantly, contract year - very good season, then some team overspends and ends up with an aging wing w/declining athleticism who never reaches the level of play he was at before the contract was signed.

Howard for Billups?
Howard for Bledsoe?

I could see the jazz and LAC doing the trade for Bledsoe! If the clippers are in the top 4 of the west Howard could really help them on a playoff run and Bledsoe is burried on the bench right now!
