Exum Contract Option

Couldn't find a good thread to throw this in... apologies.

One contract option with Dante that I hadn't considered is the contract structure Alan Williams got in Phoenix. He got a 3 year deal with the second year unguaranteed. If they don't pick it up they only pay him for the one year.

I want max flexibility in 2019. My big hesitation on Dante is that if he sustains another injury he would be untradeable. The Dante haters can say what they like, but he will get offers around the MLE (4/36).

What if we offered Dante 3/36... first year starting at $13M, Second year (unguaranteed) 12M, third year 11M

So both years 2-3 fall under the unguarantee... and if he disappoints we can cut him with no future salary. Gives us more salary flexibility... he gets a one year overpay and if he stays healthy he's a good value. Not sure that is enough for him to pass on LT security, but you gotta believe he believes in himself.

Just an interesting wrinkle I was thinking of.

Jazz would do this. Dante would not.

for who.......sorry Dante Exum isn't a hidden unknown player in this day of athletic 3 and D players . Jazz seem to be positioning to fend off and retain Exum .Jazz credibility hinges on if they can hold onto their own players starting with Exum. Our own Jazz have set the value of Exum ,they want to retain him. He's going to get overpaid his 1st year BUT Jazz think they have a special player and expect payoff to start happening with Exum being healthy. Beginning next year it will be Gobert,Mitchell and Exum and Jazz will be targeting Golden State for West Coast supremacy.

What exactly has he done that shows you that he is worth a good contract?

I wouldn't offer Exum over 5 mil a year, and even that's pushing it. You can actually get players that can play for over that

But he had 1 great playoff game and is only 24 or something.

How much longer until "Can the Dante Exum Experiment Please End" thread shows up? Give him the QO and that's it. It's already an overpay.

First time in my life I have noticed something about the players' off season outings.. Exum hanging with Ben Simmons (and Kendall) while Donovan 'bumps into' Tinashe in a LA nightclub lolz.

Bring on the Draft and FA. I know it was a goodish Game1 of the Finals, but I have just about tuned out.

Mitchell mentions Ricky and Dante when he said they make up one of the best young and promising backcourts in the entire league. If Mitchell appreciates him, I appreciate him.

If Exum just plays great perimeter D, he is an asset in today's game. And you just don't let young assets walk.

3 years $26 million. Year 3 is a $10 million team option. So he makes $8 this year and next.

Exum's next contract could potentially be the jazz's version of Curry and the Warriors. Even though I have major doubts about Exums game.

I wouldn't even compare those 2 contracts. Curry's injuries were fluke ankle injuries, Exum has had 2 blown out knees and a torn (?) shoulder. Completely different and more severe injuries than Curry.

I mean at least Brandon Roy and Oden (who were super injury prone) had some great seasons and stats to back it up. We can't ever say that about Exum

Yep, he's not an unknown. It's known he can't shoot the 3. He's a career 30.6% shooter from long distance. So spare me the 3 and d and that he's so sought after until the dude plays decent minutes for a full season and hits more than 34% from 3.

Here's a positive with Dante. His TS% went from 45.7% as a rookie to 52.1% to 56.6%. If he can play all summer and camp, maybe we could see a smaller jump to about 58.5%.

The two guys in this draft whose measurements Exum’s most closely resemble are Jacob Evans and Alize Johnson.

If his body continues to develop, I think we could see Exum playing some 3, at least on defense. His switchability here is huge and perhaps an underrated factor in deciding whether to re-sign him or not.

X has some value for the Jazz and I do like him, but his next contract will be about his potential rather than current results. As such, it's hard to gauge his value beyond the QO, particulary in this kind of cap starved offseason. The Jazz have to solidify that back court and I'm not entirely sure Exum is a long term answer there. Rubio showed what consistent production does there for this team after he turned it on after the break.

Why is everyone saying he hasn't done anything. Exum played very well when he got back from his injury this year and stats back that up. He has potential on top of that. He also played very very good defense against harden.

Yeah, his baseline right now is high level defender who can finish around the rim on drives. He really is just a jump shot away and that's worth investing in.

Traditional stat-wise, no, he didn't. Nothing at least that screams "Give me 15 million dollars next season". His advanced stats were nice, but the sample size is very limited. That said, he did D up Harden nicely by being smart about it and he still does have potential. I don't think anyone is really adverse to keeping him on a few more years, but they should not spend any significant cash on him, otherwise, the Jazz are just bidding against themselves. I don't see a huge market for him otherwise at the moment, so a small year/cash deal give him more time to figure it out. That said, if he somehow gets over 10 per on the market, Jazz should just call it good and say "Peace out."
