Exum Injured

Havent listened yet, but Zach Lowe talks about Exum and the Jazz in his newest podcast

If anyone is interested in a summary:

- Utah Jazz fans are crazy.
- They were likely a playoffs team before Exum's injury. Everyone who has been paying attention knows this. Losing Exum doesn't change that.
- While it sucks that Dante is set back a year, because he's an intriguing young player who needs play time to grow, he's so far been an unknown quantity.
- Nonetheless, Jazz got Burks back, and a full season of Gobert at center.
- It's not clear whether Exum contributed much to the team's success, and advanced stats show that Burke + Gobert line ups are as good as Exum + Gobert line ups.
- Still, Exum would have been better than Burke, and he would have probably shown improvement. Burke is a chucker who doesn't help defense.
- Neto is better than Burke, and he will earn the starting PG spot sometime this season, but it will take time for him to adapt to NBA basketball.
- Ingles is a nice glue player. It might be a good idea to start him, and bring both Burks and Hood off the bench. But they probably won't.
- Hood has really impressed.
- They talk about baking a cake, and the ingredients that go into cake at length. I mean literal cake baking. His guest mentions salty cakes (??).
- The Jazz tanked to get Exum. They have done a masterful job at it. Fans accept that tanking is sometimes necessary.

I accept that it's sometimes necessary in the current system, but that's why I also think that it's a failed system. A League should never encourage a team's front office to try to make it so that his team loses as many games as possible in order to draft a better player. This should somehow be punished.

Just listened to an Orthopedic sports specialist on the radio. Here's the interview if you want to hear the whole thing talking about Exum's potential injury and path to recovery. He said that there is a good chance for full functional recovery, but the individual knee is never the same as before the injury. He said it's usually at about 95% after recovery(I would guess that's meant performance-wise). So yah, I don't know what to make of it and I don't know what that means exactly.

So yah... full functional recovery - very likely, full performance - probably not(95% usually).
Time for recovery - probably about a year for grade 3 or grade 2 tear, several months if it's grade 1 tear or some other less serious injury.

Well, FO has 2 choices, keep baking the cake, hope for a successful full recovery and nothing has happened here (2 years)
Or use assets to pick up an experienced contributor in the league and compete NOW. This cycle is ripening fast.

Of course they thought Neto is 6'-4".

Thankfully Exum's game isn't based on elite athleticism. It's based on length and creativity with the ball. Hopefully the knee issue doesn't affect his game too much when he comes back from it. It may hurt his defense a bit but I doubt it'll hurt him to the effect like it has Derrick Rose.

While this sucks, it doesn't totally damper my excitement for this season. It's like going to Disney Land and hearing that the Haunted Mansion is shut down. That sucks and I like the ride very much, but it's not like hearing Space Mountain is closed (that would be hearing that this happened to Gobert...I'm knocking on wood as we speak).

Rudy getting injured would be like Micky getting shot in the face and the park set on fire to destroy the evidence.

...so we lost virtually nothing! We move on with the guys we have...and just hope we can get that 8th spot....and keep the Lakers and Kobe out of the playoffs for the 3rd straight year!

Most of this post is good.

This season still going to be really fun.
Are you saying that next April if the jazz are in the playoff hunt that you will be depressed/bored about it?

Seems stupid to me

You know I saw Stockton and Malone make the playoffs year after year. And while that was initially exciting, that excitement wears off. Now I would rather just see us win a championship.

So yes, I would be bored about it because it would just be watching a middling team. Exum was our first pick since god knows when with the potential to win us a championship.

Even if it is an ACL tear and it makes it so that he never reaches his potential, I still think he was the right pick. We had to swing for home or strike out. But this news sucks. It sucks bad.

I think that getting into the playoffs with one of the youngest teams in the league with a 2nd year coach in a super tough western conference is something to get excited about.

Also I have news for ya.... If Exum didn't get hurt we would be about the same good this year. Which is in your mind a middling team. (Though I think an 8 seed In the west is a top 10 or 11 team in the league..... Which is better than middling. Especially considering the average age of this team)

We will just disagree on this apparently though I think you are crazy if you can't get excited about this team getting into the playoffs without dante

dude did you not watch the summer league game ?? Exum was poised to start bringing to the table things very very unique from the 1 spot that would boost a team with other talent significantly. Might not have been consistent yet but i doubt highly he would have played anywhere near as lamely on O as he did last year. I think we'll still be in the hunt for a playoff spot but i felt like we would have been in the running for maybe 6th seed if Exum was going to be playing the way he did that game.

Rules 4 Summer League

1) Don't panic if a rookie has a bad showing. He's a rookie he needs to adjust.

2) Don't get too excited when a second year guy dominates. It's summer league and this dude has NBA experience. He should play well even if he's not that good.

You simply can't predict a good season based on a good summer league showing. Especially one game.

if Exum was going to be playing the way he did that game.

Lol.

Ya I watched that one game. He was more aggressive and got some favorable calls in that game (high draft picks often get superstar treatment in summer league.....Especially 2nd year guys that were high picks) and I liked what I saw.

He looked good in that game..... Look bad in almost all games last year..... Looked bad for team Australia this summer.

Until he shows me that he is a good player for more than one game, I will continue to think he isn't based on what my eyeballs saw in all his games overall.

But that isn't really my argument with you
You have said that making the playoffs next year would bore you. Since you seem to think dante is so good then you should be even more excited if the jazz make the playoffs without the great dante exum to carry us there.
