Fantastic long-read: How black NBA players have embraced SLC

I do always wonder why people don't like signing with Utah. Always very frustrating to just hear people say 'no one wants to sign in Utah' and not understand why. This made for a pretty interesting read, nice to get some new perspective on the team that I really have no reason to support, and the associated city and state.

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the very few diehard Jazz fans in the world who have never been to Utah, didn't start being a fan till after Stockton/Malone, and don't have people on the team from my country (I guess I'm technically Australian, but I've never lived there and I'm ethnically from HK, so really no connection at all). Anybody else that doesn't fit into those categories?

Oh wow ok, that's really interesting!!! So where do you live now? How old are you?

I'm originally from Thailand but have been living in NZ since I was young, but I do go back every year for 2-3 months at a time. I plan on moving back there permanently pretty soon though for retirement.

dong2ha I believe is korean ethnically? I think he lives in California... (san diego?)

Damn, hope this is why he didn't sign the extension ;)

Hill has enjoyed having a chef during his career, but has had a hard time finding the right one in his first season in Utah.
“I’ve had probably four chefs already,” Hill said. “What you’re so used to, you don’t find that. I like my food seasoned a lot. They don’t do that there. They are stingy with the salt and seasoning. The cultures are totally different than where I came from.”

I lived in Provo for 4 years and don't recall any racial discrimination.

It could be because provo is nearly 99% mormon, and they are super nice.

Everyone was super nice to me even though my English wasn't good at that time.

This is the number one reason why I want to go back to Utah and live there in the future (and Jazz obviously).

It's hard to beat nice people + gorgeous mountains + Jazz!

Nobody self identifies as a "white Hispanic." It isn't a thing.

Hispanic/latino terms are related to nationality, not race.

"Hispanic" is a narrower term than latino in that it only refers to persons of Spanish-speaking origin or ancestry. Latino refers to those hailing from a latin-american country.

more than 90% of argentina is white, and its inhabitants are latino/hispanic. It's a real thing.

I'm 99% sure that was included in the article for laughs. Not surprised you cringed, doe.

I think it was to show the disconnect between some people in SLC to black culture. Dont think it was done for laughs even though it serves that purpose too.

PS: my fiancé is a beautiful intelligent black woman, and she loves Salt Lake City. Even though we live in Brooklyn, she loves going back to Salt Lake and appreciates the local culture.

What are you studying there again? Or is it your fiance going to school there?

The disconnect was illustrated very well several times. That one was for the laughs.
