Fantastic long-read: How black NBA players have embraced SLC

I'm graduating in May with my PhD in counseling psychology. She just graduated from law school. Interracial power couple!

framer knows the jazz, but I'm pretty sure he lives in a basement in Delta, Utah.

50 miles from the border. Married into a Hispanic family. They would laugh at you for using the term "white Hispanic." You are "white," "Hispanic," "Mexican," "Chicano," or "IDGAF." Nobody will say "I'm white Hispanic!" even if they are white AND Hispanic.

As far as "whiter than Utah" states. Montana has to be on that list. Only white people and Native Americans. I lived there a year and a half before I saw my first Hispanic person.

Really? So even if they have one white parent and one Hispanic parent, they usually identify completely with one side is what your saying?

So a kid who is mixed is just going to tell everyone he comes from a white family or Hispanic family?

"Hispanic" is a narrower term than latino in that it only refers to persons of Spanish-speaking origin or ancestry.

I do not know of anyone with actual Spanish parentage who refers to themselves as Hispanic. People whose parents are from Spain are not generally included under the Hispanic label.

Oh wow ok, that's really interesting!!! So where do you live now? How old are you?

I'm originally from Thailand but have been living in NZ since I was young, but I do go back every year for 2-3 months at a time. I plan on moving back there permanently pretty soon though for retirement.

dong2ha I believe is korean ethnically? I think he lives in California... (san diego?)

I was in Michigan last 2 years (which is why I got to go to the same pistons-jazz game as karposov last season), but came back to HK last year. 22 now.

Oh wow, you're well travelled for a 22 year old!!! What's it like living & working in HK at the moment? I heard money's quite good there right?

i'm all for people not wanting to label themselves, but that is the dictionary definition of the word. whether you know people who use it or not doesn't challenge the validity of the claim.

“Hispanic” focuses on Spanish-speaking origin. This means Spain is included, but Brazil is not because Brazilians speak Portuguese. “Latino” refers to people of Latin American origin. This includes Brazil and excludes Spain.

Hey now, I've got about 20 of em living around me. You just weren't around the farms enough. Or Big Sky.

tbh, I haven't ever heard "white hispanic" used. I've heard while people refer to themselves has hispanic, though. Especially in Argentina and Chile (where I've spent significant time).

You aren't really "half Hispanic" from what I have seen. "Hispanic" has more of a cultural component attached to it than skin color. If you stay in touch with the culture, you identify as the race. If you don't you just become "white" I guess. Had a friend in High School that pulled in scholarships with the name "Lopez" who, to this day, has probably never even eaten an enchilada. Whiter than Joe Ingles.

And yeah, around here people usually say "Mexican" or "Mexican American." I'm sure we have other South American nationalities, but they are vastly outnumbered.

Montana doesn't have an NBA team so it's not really relevant.

^White Hispanic^

I'm 99% sure that was included in the article for straight-up laughs. Not surprised you cringed, doe (how insulted did you feel?).

What's wrong with white people ordering fried Chicken? I'm not a fan myself (all the oil makes me spew.) but I defend my right to cholesterol. I still have no idea what grits are.

Anyway the article was still a good read, I would imagine living in a monoculture would be quite difficult.

Aren't there a whole bunch of good laws against online grooming?

Have you ever had polenta? Grits are kind of like polenta.

Sure the truth. I know when I moved to Montana, I was pretty blown away at the lack of other races.

I've been lucky, I'm still studying, onto my third degree lol. Interesting that you call me well traveled, because I grew up in Beijing Shanghai and Singapore before Hong Kong.

Even though I haven't worked here, I can tell you for a fact that living and working here is absolute ****. By far the longest working hrs in the world. Not sure if the money is good tbh, but the housing is bottom 5 in affordability for cities, so any wage you get will go towards rent anyways. I'm planning on getting the hell out when I have kids.

Also, sadly, there are very few jazz fans here. Sometimes I want to hype up the jazz, but no one really understands them due to the low media attention. Sad.
