What's new

Favors is doing the jazz a favor.

I think he works. I don't think he works like Malone worked, almost manic was Malone. But Favors works, he isn't content with his game, so he will get better. How much better? I think he has more raw athleticism than Malone did, so his work will net him more 'per ten min of work'. Who knows, maybe he will thrive on his improvement and work harder. And maybe he works more than I thought i just don't know about it because he's quiet. All the same, I think he gets better.

I am really looking for him to have a killer year. If he works at it and fights for it he will have it.

One thing that i like about favors and one thing that you dont get with alot of big men in the nba is that he makes players look better. when he plays with jefferson Al looks better cause favors picks up where al lacks "that would be defense" he brings energy to the 2nd unit.. It really is to bad we have the log jam at the 4 and 5 position... or else he would def be a starter.

I think we'd be retarded not to try to lock this guy up with a longer contract as long as we can.

Sure, but how large? Max contract? He might be worth it, but remember what happened when we maxed out AK based on potential? AK looked just as promising as Favors does, but he fell apart as soon as he wasn't the main focus of the offence. I'm not saying that Favors is going to falter, but with the new CBA going over is a very bad idea. Fortunatley we won't have to worry about this for a couple of more years and by then hopefully Favors will be at the point where it is obvious that he is worth a max contract if not even more.

Besides, Favors doesn't qualify for the max contract extensions (the "Rose" rule, or whatever it is), so he would be better served waiting until the last year to sign an extension, I believe.

What if Favors shocks the world and wins MVP this year? [/wishfulthinking]

Also, doesn't the Rose Rule just mean that you can add a 5th year to an extension as opposed to 4? Anyway, I think with guys on their rookie contracts the max they can get is the same whether it's via an extension or signing as a FA. That obviously isn't the case with more seasoned vets (CP3 and Millsap for example).

At times i have my doubts about the kid... He has so much potential i am always worried he will disapoint us all. we have been waiting for him to just expolde and become the best jazz man on the team. he has shown greatness, lets home this will be his year of greatness.
Have to remember his age. In Malone's days, most guys came into the NBA with 4 years of college. Favors played 1 year. So both physically and emotionally, and in terms of basketball experience, he was less mature when he was drafted.

Personality-wise, he seems very much like Duncan. He's not going to be a vocal guy on the court. But that doesn't mean he's not going to be a dominant player. That's one reason I'm glad the Jazz brought in Mo Williams. Mo's going to be the one to hold players accountable. There's no doubt in my mind Favors will really make strides on the P&R when he's in there with Williams.

I think his confidence took a hit after being drafted so high and then essentially benched in NJ. Now he's with a organization that really wants him (KOC stating Favors was the big he was targeting when trying to move up in the draft). He made the Select team. And he's certainly not a diva, having done the Jr. Jazz tour this summer.

This is a great clip of him. Really shows his personality. Pretty funny about halfway through when he talks about his teammates. Remember how we all heard he was pretty shy, stayed in the hotel and kept to himself after first coming to Utah? I think it's safe to say he's not that same kid any more.

I feel the same. MoTown has become my favorite poster. He has been killin it for about the last month especially

=jacktheripper;396156]Here is a little piece from Locke on Favors vs Millsap and Jefferson.

Millsap and Jefferson are both in contract years, but more importantly from a pride standpoint they
both can see the immense talent of Derrick Favors and they both can do the math that there are
only 96 big man minutes on the roster.

So true, i didnt even think of it that way. the presure is good and bad. its good for sap and jefferson, but i dont hink it is a prime growing enviroment for favors sadly.

Favors has a lot of work to do to get up to the LMA level. Most players make jumps much faster than he has, but he's very young and still raw so here's hoping for extraordinary progression this season. I'll be happy if he's up to 15ppg and able to be a lesser go to guy by the end of 82, showing us he's more than an Ibaka/Jordan type talent.

I don't think many bigs make jumps much faster than he is doing, especially given his age. Had he played 30+ mins/per last season, I think we'd be saying his stats are exactly where they should be in his 2nd season. Yes, I know even a guy like Steinsma was invited to be on the Select team (he must have had connections), but Favors has shown the ability to compete against the best. There are so many very good PF's in the leagues, and voting usually comes down to those who put up the most points. That may not be Derrick. But I have no doubt he's going to be an impact player and maybe one of the elite in terms of his all-around game.

The competition from Al and Paul could be good for the team, or it could be bad. Not all 3 can start. And the one who doesn't may feel his contract value is being diminished. It's going to be very tough on Corbin to keep everyone happy...or at the very least, marginally dissatisfied.

If I were KOC or Lindsey, I'd very quietly and confidentially sit down with Derrick and tell him "he's the man" but he needs to be patient this year. Tell him he'll get more mins, but he can obviously see what the situtaion is and one way or another, it WILL be cleared up by next summer and he WILL be the #1 guy if he continues to work hard and progress.

i agree, he is young anf in a hurry to be an impact player though. he wants the minutes, and honestly he deserves more, and on any other team he would be getting starter minutes by now. it is a thing of necessity to clear our log jam at the 4 and 5 now.
