Favors training with Malone

The following is a list of players in NBA history who have had as strong a work ethic as Malone:

What no eddy Curry?

Offensivey, yes, a very similar skill set. BUT, It takes very different physical ability to guard the likes of Howard or Bynum than it does Dirk Nowitzki or Pau Gasol. When Millsap was at SF, it was FAVORS who ran out to defend the opposing SF instead of Millsap, who was too slow to react. Favors is far more capable of defending the PF position than taking on the Bynum's and Howard's of the NBA, the serious BIGs, by mostly staying rooted in the paint in a wrestling match. Favors' strength is his mobility, not his physical strength...

i would argue the opposite of what you're saying... i don't think it's HARDER to guard centers in this conference. dwight is an outlier, but other than him i would say PF is probably the toughest position to guard in the WC.

in any case, favors is fully equipped to guard either the 4 of the 5. he has length, athleticism, decent fundamentals, strength... he's fine guarding either position. that's not true of jefferson (no lateral speed on defense, no jumping ability to challenge long scorers) OR millsap (has had his struggles with the 7'0"-and-up crowd).

and even if all that weren't true... favors will still play wherever they tell him to play.

Yeah, I think Favors WOULD play C for us, but my bet is he'd not re-sign here if he forsaw C as his future in Utah. He lacks the bulk of a 'natural' Center, so he tends to commit more fouls wrestling with the big boys, which ultimately decreases his PT. He's just not comfortable in that role; much better off when he stays on the move, and using his agility, and leaping ability coming from the weak side. JMO.
And I totally agree on Jefferson and Millsap. At least Jefferson has the bulk to wrestle with opposing C's w/o getting into foul trouble. As Kanter develops, I'd take minutes from Big Al, as Kanter even now looks like a better rebounder, which we NEED.
I'm for keeping all our guys, as we could field 2 solid units:
MoWilliams/Tinsley or Watson
Burks/Foye
MaWilliams/Hayward
Favors/Millsap
Jefferson/Kanter

I like you old dude, but you shoot from the hip way too much.

Favors weighed 5 more pounds than Dwight coming into the league and in the predraft bench press Favors DOUBLED Dwight's number (14 to 7). Favors CAN and WILL play a lot of minutes at the C for the rest of his career. You can book it.

How the hell would we know about the work ethic of every single NBA ball player ever?

The hardest worker ever was probably really some guy who worked like crazy just to make a squad and come off the bench.

yup. and honestly, i disagree with the premise that he would want to avoid that spot. playing C is a great way to get yourself an easy all-star selection, since the league is so light on quality centers right now. WC centers he'll have to compete with: dwight, marc gasol, javale mcgee, marcin gortat, deandre jordan, kendrick perkins. those are the only 6 WC centers who were among the top 12 vote-getters for last year's all-star game. i'd say he's not too far from being third on that list, and second is conceivable.

I swear I have seen Favors in Sugarhouse a few times over the last month or so. Of course he might just have a big black doppelganger.

Defensively Favors naturally works in the 5 spot. Watch him work- he constantly scans the interior for possible blocks etc. IMO he is at least as set for the 5 as the 4.
