What's new

Finally took the plunge and published my book

Call me a ****, but that's just my two-cents. 90% of the books I read are in the fantasy genre, and a lot of the books sell me on my purchase by the cover as well as the back summary. Edge's first book cover was poor and he realized it and hired a professional to make the covers for his previous books and..... They're absolutely great and we'll done. I don't like the cover for his new book for a few reasons: It's overly photoshoped, it's a real photo at least I think (kinda went away from the feel of his previous books), looks like a b-graded book.

It's just my opinion. Nothing at personal at all to Edge. I'd love to read his books as soon as I'm done with the ones I'm reading now.

No offense taken. I understand your opinion. Many of the readers that commented on my site and facebook page say the cover is their favorite.

The original photo used was really quite different.

My cover artist took this photo and using my descriptions of the character (She is a tracker that uses armor made from Moonrat skins) she turned the image into the finished cover. I didn't want Tarah's face shown so that the reader could fill that part in, so she made her hair cover most of her face. She also added the quiver and staff that the character uses and made the armor look more practical by covering up more exposed skin.

In addition, I made it more difficult for her because I wanted a daytime scene and she is used to working with low light work.

She just looks like she's hunched down, staring off into never-never land, or that she's sick to her stomach and contemplating a place to deposit her lunch. If she's supposed to be a tracker, I assume she's hunched down "tracking" something -- but in a million years, I don't think I would figure that out from looking at the pic.

Just my uneducated two pennies.

Congrats on your success Edge, it's really impressive.

No, I get it. You have an opinion. We all do. I just didn't think you needed to be a **** about it.

Congrats edgewriter, my husband is a fan of Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks, I will recommend your books to him.

My latest book, Tarah Woodblade, is out. It was released yesterday

https://www.amazon.com/Tarah-Woodblade-Souls-Novel-Jharro-ebook/dp/B00IXGQVDS

It's crazy because I am moving today. My wife and I bought a farm down in Tennessee to be closer to my family. I finished the book and edited it at the last minute while my wife did most of the packing. Now we're loading the truck and I'm packing my computer away.

Currently it is ranked #22 in Action Adventure Fantasy and #53 in overall Epic Fantasy.

See you guys in a week or so once I've got in the new house and have internet set up!

Congrats! I'm just curious--are you to the point where you can make a living writing? Or do you still just have to write on the side while maintaining a "real job"?

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I still don't have internet at my new house yet and they say it will be a couple of weeks yet. I'm writing this from my parent's house.

To answer your question, I quit my day job last August. I am now a full time writer. It was scary when we made the decision, but things have been going great.

Congrats! That's a major step. I hope it continues to go well.

Congrats!

I have debated putting this up here because I know how snarky these boards can get. I fully expect to get some jeers and sneers just for posting the link, but I have invested a lot of time and developed a lot of relationships on the board here over the years and I thought, "What the heck. Why not?"

Totally awesome move, congrats. I'm glad you did not let the minority snarkies dictate your move. Takes some courage to lay it out there, which is fantastic! Good luck.

I just wrote a post on my blog today about a reader in Germany whose daughter wanted to translate the prologue of my first book into German for her school newspaper. He sent me the finished translation and it looks great. Is there anyone here who knows German that can tell me how good the translation is?

I'll take a look. I'm not a native speaker (which is really what you'd like) but I did serve a mission there.

OK, I read through a third of it (the first column) going back and forth between the German and your original English. The translation seems excellent. If I were to translate it back from that German into English again, you'd see a few minor differences, but that's to be expected. Overall, it's nearly an exact sentence-by-sentence translation.

What I can't really answer, because I'm out of practice and not a native speaker, is just how well the German itself flows. Maybe someone else can speak to that.
