Following potential 2012 draftees

I just have a feeling that coin tosses hate the Jazz. Then again, we're hoping GS loses the coin toss...maybe this could work.

Listened to brian smith on 1280 this morning - he mentioned even if the Jazz don't get the Warriors pick that KOC had enough assets to pick up a 2012 draft pick. I think he said lottery pick - but I think that would cost a bit. But maybe a late first/early second - something that could be used to grab Darius Miller.

Not a superstar but otherwise he's everything the Jazz need at SF.
Jazz gotta use the Memo trade exception on something.

My feelings about the 8th pick at this point:

If Barnes falls to us, then I would take a gamble on him. I like Cy's comparison of him to Luol Deng minus some defense, but maybe a little better in terms of scoring.

If Barnes doesn't fall, then I'm going all in on Marshall. He seems like exactly what this team needs: an incredible passer and leader to get the most out of all our weapons. Also, I'm not convinced that the guys with supposedly higher ceilings such as PJ3 are going to pan out. Marshall really seems like the obvious choice for this team, IMO.

Amen brother. My thoughts exactly. Grab Marshall then trade up some to grab miller in late first early second.

I had wanted to grab a SF with this draft but Millsap is looking pretty good there. Still should grab one though I think.

I got so used to thinking of Marshall as a guy worthy of a pick in the 20s that I'm slow to consider using the GS pick on him. But if the Jazz can acquire a late first/early second to grab Darius Miller then I feel pretty good about it all.

I'm not sure Darius Miller is much worse than Barnes - except he just doesn't have the scorer's mentality. But in the Jazz offense, where he won't be the focus anyway and all we need is a guy who can hit the 3 and play defense Miller fits the bill pretty well. And he won't cost a lottery pick.

And maybe with Marshall handing out the assists Miller could become Barnes-lite. PLUS defense.

Miller may be better than Barnes at everything other than killer scoring instincts.

Height / length = too close to call
Strength = Miller
Perimeter shooting = too close to call
Handles = Miller
Passing = Miller
Rebounding = Miller
Post play = Miller
Intangibles = Miller
Defense = Miller

Only knock is he's passive on offense (defers too much). Calipari shook him up a little this year because he would bench him for passing up open looks .. so he became more assertive. If he keeps it up, he could be the steal of the draft in the late 1st / early 2nd.

Disclaimer: I am acutely aware how homerish that all sounded, but I do believe it all.

It's very homerish and completely wrong.

so Miller's stock has risen? He was mid-second in most of the mocks I saw a while ago, and now you all are discussion first round. Doesn't surprise me, but that sucks for us.

I'm not hearing late first, but am hearing early 2nd.

No. I was hearing that the Spurs are trying to find ways to be assured they can nab him. There was no details aside from that.

If the Spurs are looking to nab him then there is a good reason for it. Maybe we can move up in the 2nd round and grab him.

So I posted my gut feel. Instead, I will post facts. I think most agree the two most talented teams in the NCAA this year was UNC and UK. In other words, one does not have any real advantage because of the players they were playing with .. Also, they played very similar minutes (2 minutes separate) so I adjusted numbers to 30 minutes.

Facts;
Height = same
Strength = it's Miller (but I have no proof of that)
Perimeter shooting = Miller by 2% (I said too close to call in my original post)
Handles = Not exactly sure how to quantify, but they both averaged exactly 2 to's per game. (My eyeball test says it's Miller, but close)
Passing = I said Miller .. Miller averaged 2 apg to Barnes' 1 apg
Rebounding = I got this one wrong (it's actually 5.3rpg for Barnes vs. 3.0 for Miller) = My bad
Post play = Miller and there's no credible debate
Intangibles = subjective .. but I feel strongly it's Miller
Defense = Miller is similar to MKG in that he defended all 5 positions at different points this year .. I don't see Barnes as that versatile.

FG% = Miller by 3.4%
FT% = Miller by 7.4%

If one were to line up the stats, side-by-side, it would be difficult to determine which was the top 8 pick vs. the 2nd rounder. That was actually my point.
