Following potential 2013 draftees

Oops.. I forgot to give props to mct on the idea of combining career minutes/productions to gauge strength of class. It would take way too long to wait for the data, but way cool idea.

Are these two posts srsly srs?? Hahahaha..
I enjoy mct's posts, but to cherry pick one or two names to prove the strength and weakness of each draft is comedy at best and intellectually dishonest at worst.

It may be fun to cherry pick one or two others from each of these drafts to 'prove' the exact opposite is true.. but the contrarians and conspiracy theorists here won't want to believe more conventional wisdom.

Oh.. and GOOD MORNING!!!

His basic point is that we (as human beings) arent good enough at scouting to just say definitively that a certain draft is totally going to suck.

There will be plenty of good players to come out of this draft.

The 2011 draft was universally lauded as the end of the freaking world, and there are several good players from that draft...

Kyrie Irving
Enes Kanter
Tristan Thompson
Jonas Valanciunas
Klay Thompson
Alec Burks
Kawhi Leonard
Nikola Vucevic
Tobias Harris
Kenneth Faried

Of course it is too early to tell if the class of 2013 will be a terrible class, but it certainly seems like it doesn't have the sure superstars in it. I think most GMs judge drafts by the number of franchise type players or potential all-stars. No one thought Lillard was going to be this good (ROY). I agree that depth can make a draft just as good as a draft with a few superstars and nothing else.

I think the Jazz have an opportunity to fill some holes on their roster. Jazz need to fill roster spots with solid role players and hope they find a diamond in the rough (Wes Matthews/Millsap). I know Wes wasn't drafted but he still shows how draft class can be better than anticipated because some players are undervalued. I think there is some talent in this draft class but I am just glad the Jazz don't have a top 3 pick this year. I think there isn't really much difference between number 3 and number 10.

You're right. I was a bit hypocritical in my argument. Sorry.

I'm just saying that an entire draft class shouldn't be judged by the name at the top of it. So there isn't any Anthony Davis in 2013, why do we care? It's not like we're picking first.

Knowing what we know now, is there anyone here who would trade the 13th pick in this draft for the 13th pick in last one? Keep in mind all those players who returned to college because of the lockout.

I'll try to be less intellectually dishonest. I know we wouldn't have to pick Kendall Marshall. We could have John Henson, Mo Harkless, Tyler Zeller, Terrence Jones, or Jared Sullinger.

The PG options have to be better this year (Burke *fingers crossed, MCW, McCollum, Goodwin), but there will even be some bigs available with legit size and skill, both projects and polished: Olynyk, Austin, WCS, Poythress, McAdoo, Robinson, Adams, Saric.

I realize potential is always more enticing than the "morning after" a rookie year, so I could be way off, but I'm going to choose to remain excited about this draft.

2013 is a great year to be picking late lottery!

FWIW, I get both sides of the debate. I tend to get on my high horse sometimes (though I hide it REALLY well) because I have been following HS bb players for 20+ years, am very connected to the scouts, college coaches, etc .. and hear all the real assessments rather than what is spun to the media.. and in turn, spun to listeners.

Because I have watched most of these kids play for years prior to them even being first mentioned in any draft context, I certainly have fairly strong opinions. I have been right about players FAR more than wrong.. but have certainly enjoyed my share of misses.

I have been hyping next year's class for 3 years now. As far as this coming draft class.. I'm not just saying there's no superstar at the top, I am saying it is generally very weak, top to bottom. I have also said it will turn out it's share of good players.. but it is less predictable than most.. the winners of this draft will have a higher element of luck on their side, imo.

Of course I can be wrong, way wrong, but I am saying, emphatically, this is more than a hunch.

I'm incredibly interested to learn of Dennis Lindsey's influence on the Jazz draft. He said a couple of weeks ago that he had to teach the scouts to watch for stuff they were not previously watching for. But other than that we don't know anything about how he orders skills and physical attributes in his evaluations. Or how the draft will be influenced by other planned moves in the team or coaching staff.

Therfore, I am trying not to lock in on any player. After this disappointing season the last thing my Jazz heart needs is another dissappointment on draft night.

I started to write this last week and near then end of my thought my stupid IPAD crashed and I just did not have enough energy to write it again. Alas! It is monday. I have had 4 days to sulk about the UNLV loss. Seriously such a disapointment. We finally seemd to turn the corner. Locking up all americans, landing a top 10 draft class and all the early final four prediction set up lofty expectations for fans. Reality is we were talented, but young and poorly coached. I believe Rice will get better. He is a hell of a recruiter and if he surrounds himself with some better X's and O's guys UNLV will improve.

Some observations of the UNLV talent pool:

-AB is a good basketball player, but still more raw than his numbers show. He has defensive lapses many times throughout the game. He is Jeffy bad on D. Whoever picks him will need to do so as low risk project because he will be a useful player no matter what, but will need to improve to be more than just a useful player. How good he can be is up to him and how hard he works and how open he is to learn. He has amazing ball handling skills for his size, crazy range and a beautiful stroke on his J. He is a tenacious rebounder when motivated. He is NOT the alpha dog that he looked to be in non conference. He faded into the background in conference play. Sure some of that is due to heavy scouting, but he never demanded the ball. Ever. In this draft proabably worth a pick between 6-9.

Anthony Marshall- Not a true point guard, but an amazing leader and does have the ability to take over a game with his quickness. He can get to the hoop very easily which caused the D to collapse setting up easy drive and dish plays for him. He plays Tony Allen like perimeter D. This will IMHO get him drafted at the back end of the second round. He also displayed a better 3 point shot than in his first three years.

Mike Moser- Poor Mike. Should have came out last year. He dislocated his elbow early on and sat back in the shadows of AB all season. Really never got in sync all year. Rumors are that he is leaving early which will probably land him in europe. He does have some strengths mainly being rebounding, but is a legitimate stretch 4 with range out to the 3 pt line. Problem is that he will not be able to defend the bigger 4's in the assosciation.

Future- All about Birch. Many here were dumbfounded that rice would not play him more. However, in those limited minutes he earned MWC Defensive POY. He is a shot blocking machine with good rebounding instincts. He needs to refine is O, but everyone here believes he will take that step next season. He is a lock to stay. Katin Reinhardt underachieved this year. Was a huge chucker, but if he is able improve shot selection he can be a special player. Many think he is league worthy, just depends on how well he improves obviously. Our incoming guys to watch are Christian Wood and Jelan Hendrick. Both are special players. Jelan should have an imediate impact and most likely will be a 6'5 PG for the rebs next year. He was a Mcd all american two years ago.

Thanks for reading my therapy session. So disapointed in the Rebs this year, but looking forward to the future. SI claimed the Rebels have perhaps the most NBA talent on and incoming in the nation. They just need to turn the talent into wins.

I like Rice as a coach. I only saw about 5 or 6 games this year.. I saw talent, but there just seemed to be a lack of clicking.. like a missing piece.. like a real leader.. similar (though not as bad as) to the UK problem this year.

I don't think Rice is the problem.. and I also agree with your assessment of Khem.
