What's new

Following potential 2014 draftees

There are several intriguing players to me: Noah Vonleh, Aaron Gordon, James Young, either Harrison, Hezonja, Exum.

Also keep an eye on Wayne Selden and Isaiah Austin to see if they somehow spring into the conversation.

I think Selden will be spectacular this year but not rise into the lottery.
Austin is such an enigma. He has such a great skill set and size.. if he can get a tad bit more explosive with his first step, he could go top 5... as I see it, he'll go late lottery to late teens.

Good top list. Agreed.

dekker

Aug 13 Update: Dekker is a favorite of the analytics crowd after a very effective freshman season. Not only does he have size and athleticism for his position, he's also a deadly shooter. He reminds a lot of scouts of Gordon Hayward.

Mar 20 Update: But the real prize is Dekker. He's not ready yet, but his versatility and size draw comparisons to a young Gordon Hayward. Next year, he could be a potential first-round pick.

Oct 7 Update: Dekker doesn't look like a NBA player at first glance. But he's got crazy range on his jump shot, is a terrific athlete and he's drawn raves for his toughness from the guys at USA Basketball. One scout sees some Gordon Hayward in him.

when it mentioned analytics crawl I thought Lindsey.

Agree with your list, but Hezonja should move up a category.

I don't know enough about him. I will do more research but from what I have read so far he has one thing that scares me. he is selfish. that is why he is on that list. oh, and add he is an indifferent defender.

TBH researching Hezonja a little bit I'm not sure he'll declare. After next summer he'll have at least one more year left on his contract. His Croatian nationality makes it difficult to include him in Barcelona's main roster. There's been interest from Manresa to lease him for a year. Manresa hired the coach of Barcelona's 2nd team from last year who coached Hezonja over the full season. In 2015 his contract will expire and there's a option to extend it for 4 more years but I couldn't find out details about it. So if we assume it's not a team option the 3 year rule of coming off the rookie scale wouldn't work. In case he plays in the ACB this season and he's doing good wherever I expect him to declare but not come over right away(Barcelona will have a hefty buyout on his contract). If he continues to play the 2nd team or doesn't have a convincing enough showing in the first league I think he'll stay put until the less deep 2015 draft and enter then.

You may very well be right.. I'm just talking about talent.

as for the jazz I want all the talent to enter. that will push some one down that I want more.

Yeah his talent is there, so I'd also rank him way higher. And a questionable character hasn't made teams shy away from players in the past and won't do it in the future probably. I just wanted to highlight his options. If he doesn't end up playing 1st league ball and has no buyout clause that teams can shoulder($575k max at the moment) he'll probably won't declare. The difference between a #15-20 pick and a 3-7 the following year in finances is immense.

not to mention that contracts haven't stopped others from entering. he would be a great draft and stash player

With so many teams tanking right now, he's unlikely to find a team intrigued to play a waiting game that has a high lottery pick and wants to develop their talent right away.
I mean it makes totally sense right now to tank with the huge top talent influx coming in the next years and the late 90's draftees nearing retirement or at least dropping out of contention. Plus the bubbles surrounding the Heat and Thunder(Can Heat stay healthy and competitive? Are the Thunder willing to pay tax and can they add more talent or will Durant eventually bolt after year 7?)

I think he'd go 11/12'ish... so who knows.

The 15-20 was more in case, he doesn't get playing time because he's not good enough yet in the 1st league or only plays 2nd league. If he got a strong year he's prolly more like 8 even next year.

I don't think Exum is a sure thing, but if he tightens his handle and keeps improving his perimeter game, he could be a great complement to Favors and Kanter. He'd be like the Penny Hardaway playing off of Shaq in Orlando.

I'm not seeing superstar with him though. Solid player, but not powerful or explosive enough yet to be a go-to scorer.
