Following potential 2014 draftees

When Curry entered the draft, some thought he would be a backup or fringe starter. His ability to be a 1 vs a 2 was questioned, his ability to defend, said he was not really a 1. Average athleticism, frail frame, relies too heavily on his outside shot. Nobody though he would be doing what he is doing today. Basically nobody knew Curry was going to be Curry, so who's to know who the "next" Curry will be?

yes and no. he was one man show for his team. he had no reason to pass to his scrub teammates. dude routinely put up 30pts and 5-6 dimes and he really was just nasty. and i always thought he would average 25pts in nba. right away. i thought he would be better marbury. and IMO he always had handles. but at that time he didn't have PG mentality. that's 2 different thing. jamal crawford has top 3-4 handles, but he ain't PG. never will be.

lavin doesn't have curry's handle. i don't see that from him. guys like lavine really needs to stay 1 more year. maybe he will develop and be next curry down the road. but that's too much 'what if' for my liking. like exum, these taller combo guards are tricky to project. if they pan out you will get an elite athlete who can run the show and guard 2 position. somebody like MCW, but better athletic ability with better shooting touch. if they don't pan out, they end up being another 6ft 5 journeyman 2 guard in this league. and there are plenty.

im probably in the minority here but i think players develop better in the NBA then in college, i know Givony from DX agrees.

LaVine needs to add strength(20lbs), almost all his problems stem from this. he needs plenty of coaching on the defensive end too which im not sure he will get next year at UCLA like he would in the NBA, for those who dont watch UCLA they kind of constantly switch from man to zone in an attempt to create turnovers

I think it's a case to case basis.

I know though that teams spend more effort developing players they pick earlier in the draft. My fear for a guy like Lavine is that he might get picked early in the 2nd or late in the 1st, and a team might try to develop him on the bench. Late 1st/2nd rounders can be forgotten about. So if he gets picked early then the odds are the team is going to be more effort in developing him.

So for further discussion
Let's say Jazz pick Smart.
His best position is PG.
What do Jazz do next?
Obviously cut JL3 first.
That leaves Smart, Burke, Garrett.
Do you keep both Smart and Burke?
Is Burke expendable?
Bring Neto over.
Smart starts. Garrett, Neto backup.
Any ideas?

You hope he's smart enough to not get into it with fans.
You hope he can shoot better than 42% and 30% from 3.
You hope he's good enough to improve the team's perimeter defense.
You call for DL's resignation.

fixed. he ain't gonna be point if we draft him. that's a big hell no.

at the end of the day, Smart will be an undersized shooting guard in NBA. his ceiling would be gilbert arenas on roids.

In NBA 2K14, I got the #1 pick and took Parker (because he was rated better than Wiggins).

Golden State got the #20 pick, and I took McDermott there, and Clint Capela with the 2nd round pick. This is what will happen.

That's nothing. I got #1, took Wiggins. GS ENDED AT 16th and was able to draft Embiid somehow. That's what needs to happen for real;)

I honestly think that the level of development is based on 3 big factors.
-personality
-opportunity
-time/effort/work ethic

1st question:
Is LaVine mature enough to get his AAU instincts out of his system, develop BBIQ, a proper shot selection, winning mentality w/o further schooling?
2nd:
Will he actually utilize the added free time to improve his game significantly?
3rd:
Will the team that drafts him give him a good chance, a good path, a capable assistant that is his trust-worthy mentor?

I think it's a case to case basis.

Agree with a lot of it

Hey guys! Good news once again! I made the All-Star team for Arizona voted by the coaches. The seniors have their own game so they are excluded. There are two teams made up of 12 players choosing from every junior, sophomore, and freshman in the state. With two alternates for each team as well. I got voted in as an All-Star! I am on the East Underclassman Team and we will play the West Underclassman Team.

EAST BOYS TEAM UNDER CLASSMAN

Dane Kuiper has offers from New Mexico, California, Creighton, and Northern Arizona, but he already committed to New Mexico. Mike Bibby Jr. already has offers from Memphis and USC. They both are coming off of state championships too. So I will be playing with some good players. I finished the year averaging 13.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 43% from the field, and 37% from three.

I just wanted to share my excitement with you guys.. Thanks for the taking the time to read this if you did.

Congrats!!! That is exciting news. What position do you play? It seems like PG or SG but just wanted to make sure. Are you getting any interest from colleges yet?

Better than Trey in every category but assists. When your school career is over you can be on my ward ball team anytime you want.

he is a rhythmic volume scorer. and putting him at PG ain't gonna stop him from shooting either. regardless where you put him, guys like that will always shoot.

Then we sure as hell better not draft him. We already have Burke for that, and he needs to cut back and actually play pg.

Wouldn't call him a volume scorer. He does a lot of his damage by getting to the FT line, not jacking up shots.

Smart only takes 12.4 shot per game......

that's not little in college standard. stauskas this year - 10.7 FGA.

dude smart will be a scorer in nba. and i think he is a rhythm shooter. miss a ton and then make a tone. trey is kinda like that, but trey is too small and not athletic enough to be 2. so he has no choice but to be PG.

true. but i just don't see westbrook/d rose like elite athleticism for him to be lethal combo guard in the next level. and when you don't have that elite athleticism, most dudes settle for jump shots. we see it all the time.

i'm just not a big marcus smart guy. i like the kid, but i've never been a fan of 6ft 3 under 2 guards. potential is there, but i think he will be one of those smaller 2 who would've been better if he was 6ft 5-6 instead of 6ft 2 - 3.
