I have seen this video more then twice and did not see any NBA level speed or quickness there. I asked specifically for at least one particular play. Could you point it in that video?
He has long stride on his first step which helps him beat slower inferior competition he is playing against. Compare his speed, quickness and explosiveness with Gordon for example, day and night. I see Exum struggling vs NBA speed and defenses, he is just nothing special.
Just watch from the timestamp the crossovers, in and out dribblings and in/out crossovers. Just focus on the first step. After that he slows it down because there's no need to keep the speed up when he can't control playmaking at it efficiently.
Let's just put it this way: Out of 100 possessions when you go full speed you'll still be challenged 20 times at the rim by help and they won't help you out with whistles.
When you control your tempo your opponent will recover to chase down your attack maybe 5 times out of 100. And when you're going full speed you'll miss more open guys cutting and resets when help is there.
You can be sure that NBA guys have video editing software to watch sequences picture by picture. Most paid FIBA streams are 30 fps. Which means they have an accuracy of 66.7 ms on timings. They'll compare his shake and bakes against Jamal Crossovers and guys like this.
There is a reason he's that high up on mocks. You just have to identify the moves that can translate and build an opinion on him.
But I respect your xenophobia and don't want to question your opinion.
Simply show how different people could look at the guy.
And I think the risk of Gordon never learning how to aim at the basket, Randle never showing interest in playing defense and developing a well rounded game plus range, Wiggins not becoming a consistent lethal weapon in the half court, Embiid having back problems and his development slowing down too early considering where he was drafted and Smart's shot never getting to the next level ARE just as real as the possibility that Exum's skillset was overrated.
I respectfully disagree. We must be watching different players ( hint - you should really pay attention who is defending MCW and who is defending Exum)
Just because he blows by white Serbians doesn't mean they are slow. They learn basketball on professional teams. And on professional teams you don't see anything other than garbage time when you're a defensive liability. And I'd say that showing 90% of your lateral quickness in a defensive stance is worth as much as 30% of the lateral quickness of the Harrison twins in a I DONT GIVE A F BOUT DEFENSE stance.
That's hyperbole but translates to quite some players in the NCAA. AAU ruins most young guys more than the few good college coaches can repair within 1-2 years.
For those of you pimping Exum, what has he ever done in real games against good competition? Seems like all we have on him are all-star games like the Hoop Summit, or U-19 or U-17 games. I haven't done much homework on him, so it's very possible he's played and played well in some league against good competition, but I haven't seen it. The closest thing I've seen to real game production against good competition are two games in the "FIBA Oceania Championship" when he hardly got in the game and shot 33% FGs and averaged 2 ppg.
Thoughts?
There's no real Australian league. And I can assure you if you ask the guys participating the FIBA U19 and Hoops Summit aren't a joke to them. That's a chance to present themselves from their best side. There's deep teams participating and just because you like a lot Americans think that every baller from outside the US sucks until they've participated in an all star games doesn't mean you're right.
Btw.. Giannis Adetokounmpo really didn't have much film to break down either and didn't play any real competition.
THIS
We need a dominate post who isn't a complete joke half the time. Kanter can't jump and is a complete liability on defense. Favors will never be a consistent offensive producer. He's a slightly more offensively talented Tyson Chandler.
Give Randle the ball and let him get to work in the post. I'm so tired of our jump shooting soft team with no offensive focus and no one who you can run the offense through. Draft Randle and you're getting an immediate double double monster who will one day score 20-25 per game and grab ya 10+ rebounds.
My problem with Kanter is that he can't put it on the floor.
Right now the offense I see in his games consists of
-open midrange 2s
-putback layups
-successful low post moves when not being doubled
If he had decent handles that he decided to use in traffic he could operate from the elbow. When you give him time to grow there and make quick decisions he would be valuable. But right now you have to cover for his *** defensively where you never can assign him to the guy that sets screens.
My option a) Send him elsewhere for a decent return
b) Give him his fourth year but be very reluctant in restricted free agency, because some idiot is going to bid on his size.
strawberry Harrison?
