Following potential 2014 draftees

What are we drafting for in this draft? Hayward's replacement? A 6th man? BPA and then figure it out later?
BPA with the 1st pick.
Then I think there are so many similar players at #23 and #35, you may look for need (i.e. SF and backup PG). Even a big like Payne could be a nice fit.

Jazz need help at SG/SF the most. Our depth is marginal and if we lose Hayward then both picks might be in that range. However you always take the BPA, even if you get a logjam at a position you can sort it out and then trade the player for another position. Jazz bench was pretty bad last year so I think they need some scoring and defense. I like some of the wing talent around 20-26. The Jazz might be able to get a decent player at 35 too. You never know however I am afraid DL will skip a step and get rid of one or two of our picks. As far as a backup PG, depends on if Neto is ready or Garrett is the answer.

I don't think it's skipping a step at this point to get some young, solid veterans. Take away the expirings (Biedrins, Rush, RJ), assume Lucas III is released and the Jazz likely have the youngest group in the league. I'm not saying you bring in an old guy. But definitely could trade for someone in their mid-to-late 20's. Maybe a guy just off his rookie contract that a team has to offload for cap/tax reasons.

Young teams and offense win championships.

I say get the youngest player possible that can score.

We can teach them defense in their spare time after they take thousands of shots a day.

You can't teach scoring or athleticism.

1. Bona fide star
2. Whatever
3. Whatever

In other words, BPA and figure it out later. At last look, the Jazz have nothing to build around and depending on the direction, a bunch of possibly very good pieces to build with.

I hope this is a joke.

I really feel Favors could be someone to build around. Remember bigs can sometimes take a while to realize potential, like Jermain O'neal.

Of The Five, I would put Favors firmly last on the list of players you could build around. Build around his what?

Sorry but you could say that about each of them. Favors and burks are the only two that have an elite skill.

What is his elite skill? Please don't say defense.

EDIT: I hope I eat **** for dogging on Favors. But I've seen 4 years of hype, and he regressed as the year went on. Can he play defense without fouling?

I think Favors is close to an elite defensive player, but you have to remember the Jazz were tanking all year, and several players were coasting. They started the season 1-13 and didn't really care much after that. Favors had sequences where he was effectively guarding as many as 3 people in the lane.

I also think Gobert can be an elite defensive player within a year or two.

Gobert? Elite?

Naw.

Could he be good defensively? Yeah.

Elite? Naw, I just can't see him being the best, or one of the best defenders in the game.

He has elite size/standing reach. He is mobile for his size. He seems to have the instincts. He needs to gain weight and get some experience but I can see him being there. Or not. He has a good chance, though.

Also he needs to get a go to move if he wants to stay on the floor.

I think Gobert can be as impactful as DeAndre Jordan. I think that's close to elite.

No way. Maybe he can play more because he has more potenial as a capable FT shooter, but he can't be as good defensively as Jordan. Jordan is an elite athlete with an elite physique.
