Following potential 2015 draftees

Anybody know how it works when drafting an injured player? Do they count towards the 15 man roster? If not, then I'd still consider Qualls at 54. That pick is almost worthless. Even injured, Qualls would represent good value there and can spend this as a redshirt season.

I would prefer Kaminsky to work out for us, because our FO doesn't care if he comes for a workout or not when picking. They've proven in the last several years that they will draft players that don't want to work out for the Jazz. So if he's there at 12 and we are on the clock, I prefer DL to have as much information about him as possible, and to know that whether he picks him or not - it was because they've decided so based on the best possible information they could have.

Only because they were in a higher tier. Overall I think the Jazz are done drafting players who won't work out. It generally doesn't end well (Koufas, Burke, Kanter, Exum?).
Teams are passing on these guys for reasons. If Frank Kaminsky gives us the middle finger, the Jazz will not draft the guy.

Random small trade thought... rumored somewhere, prolly basketball insiders, that the Lakers want to offload the #27 pick to defer some guaranteed salary. Would you trade the OKC pick and draft rights to Neto for it? Or OKC pick and another 2nd rounder for it?

Or do we want to pass on another rookie for this year because we already are so young.

Why would we pay more than what we get? It's no. 27 pick, it's not like it's in the teens... and you are doing them a favor? If we do it, we do it for a single first rounder - most probably OKC or GSW.

I wouldn't do it for the GSW pick (its completely unprotected and in a very good draft)... The OKC pick has protections on it and can't be conveyed at the earliest until 2018. I don't think they are a playoff team at that point... I don't think they can keep Russ, Serge, and KD together and all 3 have had injury issues.

We aren't really doing them a favor... we get a first out of the deal. We have so many 2nds I don't really think we will actually be able to use them.

This "mystery" Argentinian, Juan Pablo Vaulet born in 1996 seems intriguing enough to have a 2nd round promise.

I've scoured the webs for vids and translated news, he's been in the US recently. He looks fairly explosive, long armed and shows a decent first step(1:48). at the bottom of the 2nd round its a crap shoot, why not go with a young player with some talent and give it some time.

He looks similar (but smaller) to the 6th rated player in DX's 1996 rankings, Aleksa Illic, whos probably more stuck between the 3/4.

Utah doesn't have the luxury of passing on guys who won't work out for us. They will always take the best prospect and hope the guy learns to love the team.

Also, individual workouts are completely overrated by fans in general. If you're drafting someone based on a single showing instead of body of work, you shouldn't be working in the NBA.

Yup. But they can sometimes help a team decide between a couple of guys who are otherwise evenly rated.

Absolutely, but Utah will never pass on a guy just because he doesn't work out for us. It's hard enough to build a team without handcuffing yourself unnecessarily. We would be limiting ourselves in a big way if we only drafted players who prefer Utah. That really can't be overstated.

DL on 1280:

-he'd rather like have free agency before the draft
-they really like all our young players and it wouldn't be surprising if we stayed pat this off-season
-THRILLED(repeated and stressed a couple of times this word) with how Dante is progressing and working this off-season and his openness to take in advice and direction from coaching staff
-we'd be remiss if we didn't explore possibilities of signing a great free agent(they were alluding to Millsap)

Did they even get an interview with Kaminsky though? Those are usually the most impertinent.

Givony really likes Kaminsky's fit for today's NBA and thinks Looney suffers from over-analysis ala Gobert last year, and could be a steal this year.

He also thinks RHJ could be a solid player that may outperform his draft spot.

Boy, does Locke sound like a real n00b talking to Givony. Givony giving him a lesson in how the NBA draft operates in this podcast.

I listened to the Johnathon Givony podcast with David Locke. Here are a few tidbits I picked up:

- Givony thinks Towns is hands-down the top talent in the draft. Thinks he's a multiple-time All Star. Was blown away seeing Towns work out.
- Givony thinks Okafor is the 2nd-best talent in the draft who is perhaps getting over analyzed.
- Givony thinks Hezonja is the 3rd-best talent in the draft, thinks he would blow people away in a workout like Porzingis did.
- Givony thinks Russell will likely go ahead of Mudiay, just given the way the league is heading
- Givony thinks that Mudiay *shouldn't* fall below Denver at 7, assuming he slips a bit.
- Givony thinks that both Kaminsky and Looney are a bit underrated given where they're being mocked currently.

Locke asked Givony to compare players for the Jazz in a "tournament" format.

Round 1:
Lyles v. Tuner: Givony picked Turner
Portis v. Kaminsky: Givony picked Kaminsky
Oubre v. Booker: Givony picked Oubre
Johnson v. Dekker: Givony picked Johnson

Round 2:
Turner v. Kaminsky: Givony picked Kaminsky
Johnson v. Oubre: Givony picked Johnson

Round 3:
Johnson v. Kaminsky: Givony picked Kaminsky

Locke asked Givony to justify Kaminsky. Givony said Kaminsky has the highest pure-point rating (PPR) of any player 6'9" and above. Said that he's a great decision maker and would be a good fit for the Jazz.

with the trade Charlotte just did, I'm thinking they will pick Booker, maybe even Oubre if Johnson and Hezonja are gone.

Looney is pissed he's not in the bracket. Seriously though, we should get Looney if Turner's off the board.

You're right that they now have a lot of bigs---Vonleh, Hawes, Cody Zeller, Biyombo and Jefferson.

Depending on how the draft shakes out, the Jazz are still great candidates to swap picks with.
