Following potential 2017 draftees...

Maybe Calipari should scout less after RSCI rankings and more for character and skill.
On the other hand, as long as there are that many executives that can talk themselves into the players' upside after they bullied NCAA bodies and just pray they'll develop shooting somehow, he's certainly not wrong to go for hops over swoosh.
You got that wrong.
UK has had zero problems with bad apple, always has incredible chemistry, and every team has had at least a 3.0 GPA (not to mention all the one and dones are continuing their education while in the league sans one).

Calipari gets very high marks on recruiting great kids and getting them to play unselfishly, but we seem to be lacking a consistent perimeter threat each year.

He also has an Achilles heal with SF's.
He can load up the guards and bigs but always misses on the long athletic SF.

ya character was the wrong expression maybe. Let's call it the wrong kind of personalities, not bad ones. Towns and Booker are exceptions obvi.
Looking through the previous seasons, there were guys that project to be better shooter in the NBA or are already improving. Maybe the shaky shooting is a byproduct of hoarding freshmen. That most kids that age don't really have access to quality shooting coaching or just didn't get enough reps yet because their bodies allowed them to take everything to the rim on the highschool level - shift of focus hasn't happened. That's what I meant with character, mentality would've been the proper expression.

The national championship team had 1½ shooters in Doron Lamb and Miller they had Kyle Wiltjer who played 11mpg too.

There's no feasible way UK can compete better yearly with the likes of Duke with another coach.

To me it's almost misleading to call players like Jamal Murray, Brandon Knight and Malik Monk '1 shooter' they shoot well enough for 2 guards, lets call it 1½ to be conservative.

Okay.. Ideally you want more than one shooter on the floor. Call it what you want.

How many Freshman are really good 3pt shooters and able to play defense to the level Cal wants? Probably not many.

Things could've been done better, I'm not trying to absolve them of that. In fact I've lodged a good amount of complaints about some recruiting practices/priorities and suggested seemingly good alternatives over the years here - and a decent amount of thats been justified. Admittedly some of them I was fooled (along with the consensus) with.

You may recall that I used to say I wanted them to recruit Markus Howard, he'd have been able to function as a solid shooter this year if needed, those minutes go to Hawkins tho, who shooting 27% from 3.

They really should offer on Darius Garland he'll function as a sniper from day 1.

In 2017 there's a top-100 from NY named Jordan Tucker who's a 6'7" SF that can really shoot. It might be too late but I'd imagine UK could land him late if they wanted. He's kinda soft tho.

Dwayne Bacon is starting to cool down from 3, 2 for his last 15. He just put in a great effort and 24 points in victory vs #21 Florida though.

Quiet game from Isaac, only 1 FG, a 3, and 9 points. Florida's Devin Robinson was also quiet.

Michael Ojo looks like he's gonna win the Poeltl increased FT percentage award in a landslide this year as a Jr he shot 38% so far he's at 75% (27/36)

So. Donta Hall is having a great 2nd half vs Oregon right now. He's definitely on the radar this year. Real bruiser inside. Has grabbed some great ORebs. He'd be a good platoon with Lyles, a bit redundant with Bolomboy though.

5 3's from Tyler Dorsey in this one he's shooting like 45% on 5 attempts per.

If you have the Pac12 network you should really tune into the Washington-Nevada game. Cameron Oliver and Fultz are going ballistic in the first 10 minutes.

Cam Oliver is the closest thing to Geurschon Yabusele (#16 pick last year) in this draft. 0 rebounds in the first half but thats anomalous. He's shooting 45% from 3 on 4.6 attempts per game. Also blocking 3.2shots per game, has 2 so far.

What a sequence at the end of this 4th q in Nevada-Washington. 1:20 togo Cameron Oliver blocks Fultz at the rim in a tie game 83-83.

Markelle draws a foul down 2 with 12 seconds to go and calmly hits both FT's dead back rim.

Marcus Marshall hits an absurdly difficult falling runner, sure to be #SCtop10, with a second on the clock for the win.

Whats not to like about Cam Oliver if he's hitting 3's at that clip? He's getting bumped up in the next mock.

Also if UK misses on SG targets hopefully they can find a X-fer like Marshall, he's shooting like 9.5 3's per game and making em at a great clip.

Bacon reminds me of DeShawn Stevenson (despite Stevenson not playing college basketball) in that both are cocky, neither have/had a mid-range game and Bacon has the skills - like D-Steve - to be a more-than-solid defender. I don't think Stevenson lived up to his potential. And I think there's a chance Bacon might not, either.

Stevenson had a lot of inefficient seasons because his lack of mid-range hurt his game. If Bacon improves his mid-range game he's going to be a great value pick and his ceiling is high, IMO. If a team like the Spurs drafted him it would be the best thing to happen to the guy.

Agree with most of this. Not sure about his ceiling being all that high, it's early though this season will prove to be telling.

After the Samford game FSU is going to play a lot of good teams. It will be interesting to see how Bacon plays - he had some bad games against ranked teams last season but as the season went on he improved. We'll see if he's grown as a player.

Keep an eye out for 6'4" USC Freshman PG De'Anthony Melton. He's shooting it well from 3 and has a an almost 3:1 AST:TO ratio. Damn good athlete.

Seems to have some Dejounte Murray to his game

Isaac Copeland is transferring from Georgetown. Remember when NBAdraft.net had the Jazz taking him in the teens last year? Lulz

Watching Tacko Fall on ESPN3 right now he's got 14pts on 7/7 shooting 9rebs 2 stls with 3 minutes to go in the first half vs Penn.
