What's new

Following potential 2017 draftees...

If Evans was 6'3 he'd be a top-10 pick. That's really one of the only knocks on him. The thing is he is different from the usual undersized guards that go through the draft.

How is he different? For players that small they need to be special to succeed. The ones that do are the exceptions. For example, his finishing around the rim is 48% in college. What do you think will happen when you up the size and athleticism of the opponents? And to add insult to injury he doesn't have the vertical athleticism to make up for it. He obviously has some skill and craftiness, but I'm not sure I like his chances of succeeding on midrange jumpers and off the dribble 3s. Could he do it? It's not impossible... but I think there will be other prospects I'd like better where we pick.

He is more athletic and a better defender than most people give him credit for. I'm not focusing on the scoring as much as I am focusing on his facilitating. No player has put up the assist rate % and steal rate % Evans did in the past 25 years. All of the prospects in our range have flaws. You make some good points but it is foolish to not realize that he is an elite facilitator.

I have to admit WC makes some compelling arguments for Evans and he's obviously a talented player, but i can't get past the size. Too hard for these short dudes in today's NBA to have great success.

I will say that I was a little disappointed that he measured out at 6'0. I was hoping for 6'1 or 6'2. He does have a 6'5 1/2 wingspan though and a 7'11 standing reach. He makes up for some of his height with his length.

Name me how many PF's, college or NBA, who can make the play Kuzma makes at 00:48. PG vision, guard handle, SF speed, in a 4's body.

TJ Leaf is a poor man's version of Kuzma. Doesnt have the fluidity and his 3pt shot is slow and mechanical compared to Kuzma's quick and compact 1 motion beauty.

Kuzma seems like a very good prospect and I would've liked him more if he stayed around a played more games at the combine. One good game then pulling out of the combine doesn't sit well with me. He's agent must've decided to do so and so they did. If he's around at the 30th pick, sure why not. But the 24th? That's a no for me.

Here's Bam Adebayo working out (though not the most structured workout). Notice that he's about 3x quicker than Ike Anigbogu.

Re: Kuzma --

He's almost 22 years old. His shooting percentages are okay, but not compelling. He is fluid, more so than I thought he'd be. I think he'll go early second round. Maybe he gets picked in the scrum in the late first. Leaf, Bolden and Wilson have more upside due to their athleticism, and Lydon is a lights-out shooter. John Collins is a better scorer. There are enough bigs in the late first round that it will be beauty in the eye of the beholder, but I wouldn't take him at 24. I just think he's a complementary player and a step below a first-round athlete.

I view Kuzma the same way I view Tyler Lydon. They do everything on the court well but they aren't exceptional in any one area. I think they'll become versatile forwards who can fill in at SF or PF off a teams bench. Might not ever be starters. I'd be comfortable taking them in the second round. Not really a fan of taking them in the first.

It's a question of upside. The Jazz want to put the ball in Lyles' hands and have him create out on the floor. The Jazz want Lyles to shoot 3s like he did his rookie season. They want him to defensive rebound. Can Kuzma do these things at the same level as Lyles? Maybe he can, but I'm a bit skeptical. I do think Kuzma can be a decent back up. He won't be the defender and rebounder that Bell is. He won't be the shooter that Lydon is. He won't be the shifty creator in the paint that Leaf is. He won't be the physical beast that Bam is. He won't be the pick-and-roll finisher that some of the others will be. Etc. But he can be a rotation player, imo.

Lydon is an exceptional shooter. He's the best floor-spacing big in the draft, unless you believe in Bolden. The question is what Lydon can do when he gets chased off the line.
