Following Potential 2018 Draftees

I keep repeating myself on this, but if Zhaire Smith grows another inch or two and adds some strength, he could be a pretty awesome wing. He was 6'3" in high school and currently lists 6'5". If he can get to 6'6" or 6'7" and 210 lbs, he'd be similar to Iguodala.

I think Utah is a near perfect landing spot for him, If he's gonna fall where these mocks have him projected, which I still don't really buy, he deserves to go to a team that prides itself on player development.

I think he's more ready than people want to admit too tbh. Feel like he's the type of player who the Jazz only give garbage minutes to in his rookie season, but performs admirably in those limited minutes and the fans clamour for more PT..

Ya know if he pans out to be starter quality, it's a jackpot scenario for Utah... It'd be like when Atlanta got Jeff Teague in the 20's...

Simons
Mitchell
Ingles
Favors
Gobert

would be very dangerous if Simons reaches his full potential, the offense would really be more potent than it currently is...

He looks like he's a high school sophomore, just looks really young, but the talent is undeniable. He's got a scorer's mentality and some creativity like a young Jamal Crawford.

Yep great video btw if ya haven;t seen Simons yet watch that one... He is a COMBO guard tho, if Utah drafts him it'll be for that role... This whole thing with listing him at SG is outrageous. This is not the player u want to have go up against Donovan Mitchell, he's the type u'd want to complement him....

In AAU he'd play for Team Breakdown next to Eliijah Weaver (headed to USC next year), who's about 6'5" and a legit combo guard as well(**** he might be a legit PG...) That IMO is really a primer for him to play next to Mitchell..

The double combo guard look is damn viable u just need the right ones... Next to Mitchell he'd be the lead guard, Ingles is a perfect 3 to have for this type of thing......

His low assist numbers don't concern me. No one on these teams can shoot or score like him, those teams are all at their best when he's far-and-away the #1 scoring option...

The real silver lining with Simons is this, he's got the potential to make it look real easy... So for a team like Utah, they are gonna look at this kid thoroughly.. They could trade up just to secure him actually IMO..

Also just for the record, when Simons gets drafted, not that he's some draft expert *cough* Ben McLemore and Okafor #1 *cough* Jay Bilas is gonna RAVE about him...

The real trade up target for Utah, said it before I'll say it again, is Wendell Carter Jr. U want another player in the ROY race next year? thats the move. It's also a shrewd cap move cuz it allows Favors to walk and be replaced with a 4 year rookie contract...

He steps right in and starts at PF immediately and drops like... 30-40 double-doubles as a rook in Utah and the entire team we know like Rudy Mitchell, Ingles, everyone will be floored and RAVE about how good he is..

He is gonna play for like 20 years too...

I swear he's one of the greatest freshman big's I've ever seen, easily. What a player! Whatever the trade-up cost, and it'll be hefty, it'll be worth it...

He's an amazing complement to Rudy Gobert... There's many things he'll end up doing better than Favors at the NBA level.. This sort of stuff for sure, which is pefect with Rudy..

While watching that Nova game last night I thought Omari Spellman looks like a definite match in Utah..

He'd be a high upside 2nd rd pick for sure.. I like him better than Caleb Swanigan.

He can play PF, he's got nice feet. He's lost a ton of babyfat the past few years, used to be 270lbs. smart player, plays the game the right way.

6'9" with a 7'1" wingspan.

I was thinking if there's 2 rookies u could use to replace Favors at PF, i'd take (trade up) Wendell Carter in the 1st and Spellman in the 2nd.

Another option at PF here that doesn' get enough mention is Maryland's Bruno Fernando, who's a player I've posted about here for a while. At one point, for reasons unknown, he was only rated 3-stars by some services, around the time he de-commited from SMU IIRC.

He might actually be the closest to Favors of these options.. They'd need to take him in the 1st rd tho, No way he falls out of the first... Warriors would take him in a heartbeat at #29.

I think I've found the guy I hope the Jazz get in the upcoming draft. It's Caleb Martin from Nevada. I hadn't seen him before this tourney, but I came away extremely impressed. He sort of reminds me of Gordon Hayward coming out of college. Both are/were...
  • wings that played the post for their undersized college teams (so both were tough)
  • great competitors
  • able to handle the ball (haven't seen enough of Martin to know if his handles are at Haywards in college, but he seemed very solid with the ball)
  • and both had range on their jumpers.

Both brothers have the handles of a guard, their true triple-threat players... He's a 6'7" swingman. I've caught a lot of Nevada games the past 2 seasons. I am a big fan of the Mountain West conference.

First pointed this kid out here when DX had him rated like the 20th best international prospect born in 1997. He's worked his way into the conversation for Utah to take him in the 2nd rd.

Made up my mind. I want Musa. 56.9% from 2, 36.4% from international 3, 6’8”, really good handle, imo a really good frame, he’s just 19 y/o, and given his foreign status, I’d like his ability to fit in. I also like his body language on the court. I don’t see any ego or red flags.

I really started to like the growth of Carter but I think he will be out of the Jazz range even to trade up with out it costing too much. I see him now as a top 8 pick.

Just interesting risers and fallers lately in the draft

Risers

W Carter - He has only gotten better as the season has gone on and benefited from teams playing to stop Bagley. I wouldn't be surprised to see Carter go before Porter
SGA - He is looking the part of a modern NBA combo guard has great size and has probably moved ahead of sexton on draft boards
Z Smith - What is not to love with his athleticism
J Porter - He is super young and that is why he is moving up he has some potential and don't be surprised if he has a career comparable to the more touted brother

Fallers

T Young - He is good but not top 3 that he was being touted
Bamba - not huge but he has a long ways to go
R Williams - With out the ability to shoot he wont be able to play much 4
Sexton - His shooting has dropped and so is he

Mikal Bridges might be in some teams' top 8 now. He's been steadily rising.

Some teams may like Khyri Thomas in the late teens or 20s.

I'm not sure where people think Jontay Porter will go, but he could go teens as well.

Troy Brown seems to have slipped, mostly due to other guys rising. He could rise a liittle if he shoots well in workouts. If he doesn't learn to shoot consistently, his ceiling might be a somewhat poor man's Tyreke Evans, mostly a bench player.

Simons has been my guy for a while. I value off the dribble shooting a lot (probably overvalue it). He has a kind of strange low release, but it's really quick. He also has incredible balance, especially on coming around screens, pullups, and floaters, and we all know how much Lindsey loves his P R O P R I O C E P T I O N. I think if Snyder gets his hands on him, he'll be a decent defender since he has good feet, lateral quickness, and balance. He's got quick hands too. The natural ability is evident, he just has the typical young player mistakes like lapses of attention (keep him away from AB) and effort. Snyder and co can mold him into a good defender.

I'm not sure what his measurables are, but he's got that kind of Dejounte Murray body where there isn't even a euphemism for his body composition. I don't think you can even call him "wiry" or "strong for his size," he's just weak at this point. His frame isn't very wide either, so he struggles finishing through contact. You can see flashes of advanced finishing moves though, like those wrong-footed layups and a nice floater game. We saw how quickly Donovan figured out these moves, and Simons is farther ahead than Mitchell was at the same age at these things. But Mitchell is built like a linebacker and can finish through contact way better than Simons (though Mitchell kind of struggled with this in college and improved it rapidly). While Mitchell wasn't afraid of contact, Simons shies away and opts for floaters and fadeaways.

I'm just kind of rambling, but I think a backcourt with him and Mitchell (and Dante!) would be electric and, if nothing else, really entertaining. If we don't get Simons, I hope he becomes a good player because he looks like a guy that could just be a "good stats bad team" player, or worse, in a Malik Monk situation where some hardass coach doesn't play him. I'd be scared to pick this kid in the 12-16 range if I were a GM with millions of dollars and my job on the line, but since this opinion doesn't affect me, I'd gladly take him!
