I just don't see Ace as being able to create at all in the NBA. His first step is heinously bad, his handle is bad, and his playmaking is bad. He reminds me of Harrison Barnes in that he can literally do an iso from the triple threat in college, but he's not nearly good enough at it to be anything but an offball player in the NBA.

Everybody has to transition to the NBA. The point is, Lauri and Ace play nothing alike. Not in college, not in the NBA. Of course Ace has to change his play and that will mean moving off the ball, that does not mean he's Lauri. I don't care about being so specific on comparisons, but when it's a polar opposite type of player it really makes me wonder how that conclusion is drawn. Lauri is comically bad at facing up and playing in isolation. That is the one thing Ace is good at.

All that stuff is being way way wayyyyy overstated.

For a 6'10 player his handle is promising. I wouldnt say it's bad by any stretch. You dont have to be Shamgod at 6'10. You just have to be able to get to your spots and maintain your dribble against defenders.

His first step is by no means heinously bad. I dont know where to rate it, but it's by no means bad, especially when you consider how he will have to be guarded at the NBA level. You can't really afford to give him airspace as a defender with his size and ability to rise up over defenders.

He's showing improvement over the course of the season on his playmaking, so I would expect that to continue as he gets into the NBA.

I would say mostly based on the fact he has seemingly improved on it during the season as it became a talking point and the fact that I think the bigger issue in him not getting assist consistently is teammate quality and role.

Essengue will need to get in the buffet line next to Cody, but I’d rather have someone with bonafide wing skills than an energy big like Asa Newell. Essengue is interesting.
 
Passing can come along for Ace....I just see his low assist totals as more of a reflection of his BBIQ and lack of feel. It may surface in the assist numbers and be most evident and playmaking, but it shows up all over the court in different situations. This can get improve and likely will get better.....but he's going to need a ton of improvement. His physical profile is much better than Tre's, but I think Tre has great feel (on offense).

3-6 is still very volatile for me. He could end up anywhere in that range.

It's absolutely hilarious when people compare college players and proven NBA players straight up.

They play in environments that are nothing alike. The defensive pressure Lauri faces is ridiculous. Sure he's not a good 1-on-1 player in the League, but the only thing we can really say about Ace is that he mostly does OK against much inferior competition.

Ace is an 18 year old playing in the Big 10. How is that inferior competition?

Yeah, he's doing pretty well in college for a young college player.

Let's save the NBA player comparisons for when he's actually in the NBA. As said above, he will have to change his game in the league.

At some point we'll see who he is when he's facing dudes who are better than anyone he's ever seen in the NCAA.
