Following Potential Draftees - 2019 (not kidding)

What? I must be confused, because surely you know that the draft is before free agency opens.

Of course I understand that.

In order to trade for Conley during the draft, it is really complicated. The contracts for Korver and Favors are complicated. We would have to send back something in the neighborhood of $25-28 million in contracts for Conley during the draft. I don't think we have that unless we include Exum, Crowder, more.

If we wait until the moratorium, we can easily pull the trade off using more space than a complicated salary mess.

I would be so incredibly disappointed if we traded for Conley before even trying to get Tobias, Kemba, Russell, Brogdon, etc. in free agency.

I think the Jazz just need another high level scorer. Doesn't have to be a PG, or could be a scoring PG who isn't much of a distributor.
Whether we get a combo type guard to play with DM or a scoring 3 or 4, a good additional scorer will help this take take a leap.

Bingo

Well yea, I think this is a feeling shared by most around here. But that still leaves me confused about your original point, who cares if our cap space gets taken up by Conley if we've already struck out on everyone? Or even if we sign someone then still acquire Conley by matching salaries.

I think if we did the Conley deal we could/would include Exum and Jae, with the delta being made up by cap space. Would give us a reasonable amount of space to address PF with Rudy Gay or Niko... someone on that level. Or we could play Royce as a small ball 4 a lot.

Draft night trade is basically impossible as you mentioned.

Because Conley is Conley and he's 32. Cap space could be anything we can dream of. It's like the mystery box.

Honestly, if we trade for Conley I'm happy. If we take the route Lopo wants and we land Kemba, Harris or even Randle I'm ecstatic. But if we strike out and run it back (Or sign similar level of talent to replace who we lose) I'm going to rage.

I care if we use our 2020 1st rounder and all our cap space to get Conley. I also don't like the idea of using our 2020 1st and using either Exum or Crowder to get Conley. If we sacrifice Favors, we are really going to need Crowder. If we lose both, we are really going to be hurting. As for Exum, I haven't given up on him yet. To me, he's more of an asset than a liability at this point. I know others agree and others strongly disagree.

During the draft, Conley is highly unlikely. After we swing and miss on all good and solid free agents, then we can discuss Conley. In a dream world, Memphis cuts their losses and sends his $70 million over two years to us for peanuts. We give them savings and we don't have to sacrifice a 1st. I could stomach that. Yes we lose Favors, but getting Conley and keeping our 1st rounders sounds more fair to me than the alternative.

Conley could be a great mentor for Mitchell. Like Millsap has been for Jokic in Denver.
Good teams need a vet that can play not just teach. Conley has another 4 to 6 good years left in him. Go look at his father and you will see. I can see him being like Kidd and playing high level until he is 40.

Lopo, what is your game plan overall? Build for future of win now mode?
What do you want for them this next year? Playoff team? Lottery pick? Win a playoff series? What would make you happy?

Mike Conley SR I seen do a 360 dunk when Conley played at OSU. He had to be 45plus years old when He did it. Now he was an Olympic high jumper but Conley has the Genes that he going have gracefully and well. He the type who loves the game so much he will be playing pick up ball after he retires at local parks and gym. He a really good night and he was brought up in a good family so the family structure of Utah wouldn't bother him like it would some.

Lopo, what is your game plan overall? Build for future of win now mode?
What do you want for them this next year? Playoff team? Lottery pick? Win a playoff series? What would make you happy?

I want our Utah Jazz to win a title. I want to win the whole thing. So to your questions:

1. What is your game plan overall?
First, I want to use our 2019 1st round pick. I would only trade it for two things - to get up in the draft or to pick up what would seem to be a higher pick in 2020 or 2021.

Second, I pursue almost all of the best free agents in this order: Tobias, Kemba, Brogdon, and Russell using the max then Randle, Rozier, Jabari, and Lamb only if the number is fair. Even the 2nd group entices me more than most trade targets because we get to keep our picks. All 8 of those players are improvements over Rubio.

Third, if we strike out on free agents, we pursue all the trade targets. I'm looking Miami Heat players, seeing if Jrue is available, Blake Griffin, Dinwiddie, Josh Jackson, TJ Warren, and other guys who emerge who aren't being discussed right now.

Fourth, we identify the next level of free agents who might have long term potential or are really good fits for a cheaper contract. Guys like Jabari, Portis, Gay, Thad Young, Beverley, etc.

Fifth, if we can't sign one of my free agent targets or trade for a great player via trade, we start debating ideas like Conley, Paul, Love, etc. VS picking up a 1st rounder for taking a bad contract (Biyombo, MKG, Olynyk, etc.).

Overall, my game plan is to improve our roster without having to sacrifice a 1st round pick.

2. Win now or build? I would rather make moves with the next 5 years in hand than the next 2. I would rather build for the future than have a goal that can't go any further than getting blown out in the Western Conference Finals. If we make moves that help us win now (Tobias, Kemba, etc.), then heck yeah. However, I don't want a move that just focuses on the now.

3. What do you expect next year? I expect to make it to the 2nd round at the least. Donovan, Royce, Grayson, and Exum should improve. Even if we took a salary dump in order to pick up a 1st, I expect the 2nd round. We really don't have anybody on our roster who should take a step back. Without Rubio, we should still win 50 games this year if we draft a contributor and sign any capable BAE type PG. Our franchise players (Rudy and Donovan) should good enough to carry us farther than the 1st round even if we lose Rubio for a BAE type PG.

4. What would make me happy? Competing in the 2nd round while also identifying one more long term piece that goes next to Donovan and Rudy. We found one in Royce, but we need to find another 5-10 year key guy for a Jazz dynasty. If we aim for instant gratification and fizzle out in the 2nd round, I'm not excited this time next year. If we add more assets and at least one more long term piece, I'm encouraged by a competitive 2nd round exit next year.

What a horrible mock.

So if you want to win a championship in next five years you need vets like Conley and need to draft well. Look at nuggets. They are set up real nice for future and they paid Millsap a lot of money but it was one of those you use it or lose it and Millsap helped them Jokic from a second rounder to in the MVP convo and first team all nba. I have a feeling Conley could help Mitchell. He needs a vet next to him that can hoop.

I'm just not sure the long-term builds are possible in the current environment. Unless you get a super duper star to stay (Steph, KD, Lebron, Harden) you are going to have a quick build and push in for a 2-3 year window. Unless you go full process and acquire a bunch of guys that become all-stars in back to back drafts I think the old Utah Stockton Malone slow build is dead.

Supermax contracts, shorter deals, player movement/empowerment, punitive luxury tax all kinda put a kink in the slow build philosophy. Once we lock in Rudy and DM on their max deals you have to pray to get lucky in the draft... The timing is tough to nail.

That's why LoPo the best GM. He is thinking about how to maybe win 5 years from now instead of winning for the next 5 years.
