Frankenstorm Set to Hit the East Coast Next Week

I'm fine. Storm seems done though wind gusts may still be around 40-45 at times. No rain currently but I think there are supposed to be some showers later. Power is out here like it is in a lot of Jersey. I'm currently running my big screen tv and staggering my fridges on my generator. I think I should have enough gas to last me through tomorrow, perhaps even a day or two beyond by which point I'll be able to go out and get more gas even if the power is out which it may be as they're saying 7-10 days possibly. The only negative aspects for me so far are that my sump pump is backed up (clogged?) and not working. It's just about to start to very slowly spill over. That's annoying and shouldn't be that bad I hope. There's also about 30 or so shingles in my front yard but the roof doesn't look too bad.

In everyone's opinion, are these something even claim-worthy with my insurance company? I mean, I feel like my insurance will just go up if I file a claim and that it will cost me more in the long run.

You most likely have at least a $500 to $1,000 deductible. Repairing 30 shingles shouldn't run more than $500 unless you are getting screwed. Assuming that's your only damage. I wouln't make a claim on my home insurance unless it was at least $2,000 damage. IMO

On a standard homeowners insurance policy the deductible is usually much higher than that for damage due to a hurricane. Mine is $7500 and that's on the low side.

Wes, if you want to wait on line for a couple hours and fill out a bunch of forms, FEMA might be the way to go. They will probably have personnel in your town soon - check your town website. I've heard from folks who filed claims from Hurricane Irene that if it's only a few hundred bucks they'll most likely pay out.

Dutch, the power it takes me to charge my cell phone a couple times a day on my generator is negligible.

I know everyone is very concerned about me so I'll provide an update. I am now over 3.5 days without power. The temperature has been low each day with a high in the low 50's and the low going from the low 40's into the mid to high 30's last night and over the next few days. My house has been holding steady at around 58 or 59 so I'm hoping our anticipated high today of 54 spikes a bit to around 57 or so as it's supposed to be sunny and my thermostat temp usually rises 3-5 degrees warmer than the outside temp.

About 20% of my town has their power back and even less have it in my county. I have plenty of food and a good amount of water, especially considering the lines in my area haven't been compromised. I have to fill my generator up about four times a day using a little less than a gallon each time and every morning I wake up at around 5am, refill the generator, go to a gas station and wait online for a couple hours and refill my truck and five gallon container even if they already are about 90% and 40% filled respectively. I wouldn't be so crazily diligent about it but I need my generator for my sump pump as I really prefer it if my basement doesn't take water, not even a little bit.

I have no hot water so it's been one cold shower a day for four days now. My days have pretty much consisted of sleeping at night, doing the gas thing in the morning, doing housework or errands that need tending, keeping up with my fantasy basketball and football teams via my phone, watching a movie or two on my DVD player, making sure my generator always has gas, playing Scramble Free on my iPhone with MsSerp, and listening to her fill me in on which gas stations or businesses have reopened, how long the lines are, how many homes do or don't have power in our town, county and state, as well as the anticipated weather which could be the worst of it all that virtually no one has mentioned in articles or other media outlets I've been following. What am I talking about you ask? The Nor'easter that is set to hit us Tueaday. It could be rain, it could be snow. They don't know just yet. But either way this 30's spell should continue which is gonna suck, and this could cause a lot of people who've had their power restored to lose it again.

It's pretty crazy. Maybe 25% of businesses are open. Those who are sell out of all the important **** very quickly. Gas is a bitch to get and pretty soon the places that do have it may very well have empty tanks without a truck in sight for days or even weeks. And if this possible storm is bad, it could even get worse.

But all that said, I personally am okay so far. I think we'll get power back today or tomorrow and if we don't, Sunday brings football and I can just find some bar to go to watch the games. If I don't have power by the time I wake up on Monday, and the storm appears as if it could be bad, then I'll be concerned and on edge. But as of now, the whole powerless process is just tedious and monotonous. And chilly.

I'm glad you're doing all right considering the circumstances. Hopefully the impending storm weakens before it hits.

I've been incredibly lucky - no problems at all. But people are getting their *** kicked all around me. Every morning when I drive to work I see a couple hundred people standing on line to get gas for their generators. And another 80 or 90 cars waiting to get gas. I drove by that same gas station last night at about 10:30pm and there were 3 cops guarding it - kind of a creepy sight.

I work about a mile from my house - so I don't have to worry about gas so much. If I run out, I'll just walk it. I'm not going to take someone else's gas who has an hour drive to work. My son's school is also within walking distance but we haven't even heard if they're going to have school on monday. My guess is no.

People are definitely starting to get on edge a little bit. You can start to sense it. A couple of guys that I work with that I've never seen pissed off are clearly pissed now. If things aren't back up and running by early next week, I can definitely see something ugly happening somewhere.

How does this work?

https://www.myfoxny.com/story/19971795/driving-restrictions-into-manhattan

City and state officials announced Wednesday that drivers must have at least three people in their vehicle to cross into Manhattan using any of the East River bridges and the Lincoln Tunnel from 6 am- Midnight on Thursday and Friday.

If I'm a single driver that wants into NYC through those routes are there a bunch of random people waiting that I just could scoop up to comply? Go to a Home Depot and load up on immigrants? Use a rideshare website?

So while so many people are struggling to get clean water and power the city officials have decided that it's a necessity to carry on with a stupid Marathon?

Wow...

Stupid is as stupid does...

Which city?

New York.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1394232-why-holding-the-new-york-marathon-this-weekend-is-wrong

Couldn't agree more. Just wait a week or two. I'm sure Marathon runners will still come. Priorities priorities...

Despite the ravaging wind and water Sandy brought to New York City this week, Mayor Bloomberg and race organizers have decided to hold the annual New York Marathon.

Why?

The hubris of holding the New York Marathon this weekend is staggering even by New York standards. What is the point of holding an event like this, one that needs a great deal of manpower and hundreds of generators that could be used to help those still without power? What about all that bottled water that could go to families who are forced to drink potentially tainted tap water as they wait for help?

The trains are still down to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I can take a bus from the middle of the borough over the bridge to 59th Street, which is probably seven miles. During that bus ride, I will be standing the whole time with my face in someone's cornrows and some fat lady's *** touching mine. I'm not complaining. But the gas stations, because they are few in number, are in such high demand (as Candrew said). There are lines down Washington Ave in BK of parked cars, with their drivers waiting to get to the pumps. **** is getting cray.

One thing you can do, depending on your generator...

Turn off all the circuit breakers in your home's breaker box (especially the main ones that shut down power to the whole house).

Then connect your generator to your dryer's electrical outlet (assuming you have an electric dryer, and your generator has that type of outlet, and you have the cord).

Then power the generator up, and turn on the circuits in your breaker box that you need to use. Keep the main one that shuts down power to the whole house in the off position though.

If your generator is strong enough, that could power your whole house. Hopefully it's at least enough to get your furnace and water heater working, with your tv, microwave, and fridge.

You'll want to ground your generator too (assuming it has a connection to ground). You can use a car jumper cable for this. Just connect it to a rod in the ground (usually 8 feet or so).

Good luck man.

Wrong. Marathon now cancelled.

It was cancelled a few hours ago because of pressure from articles like I posted. When I posted it was still on.

The mere fact that the marathon was even considered tells how asinine some people are. Don't have a damn marathon while people have no gas, electricity, or clean water. Get the damn subways back before you run a stupid marathon. Put it off a week or two. No one cares about marathons anyway. It's not like it's the superbowl or something.

For a second, I thought you made perhaps your only worthwhile post in history. Then, you reverted back to the bumbling fool we all know you are. Good job.
